Ravens Alternate Uniforms Don’t Impress in Week 15

Ravens alternate uniforms

The Baltimore Ravens have been ravaged by injuries in 2015. Franchise quarterback Joe Flacco tore his ACL, veteran wide receiver Steve Smith went down with a torn Achilles, stud pass rusher Terrell Suggs was lost for the year in week one and even starting running back Justin Forsett broke his arm. It’s been a disastrous season, and somehow Baltimore may have made it even worse in week 15.

Perhaps because of the rough season – one in which the Ravens were picked by many to be Super Bowl contenders – the team decided to add a little flare by providing custom football uniforms this past weekend. Regardless of the motivation, it didn’t really work out too well.

SB Nation took a look at it themselves in hilarious fashion, and they point out the obvious: just, why?

Again, it was probably all meant well, but Baltimore inexplicably added mustard yellow pants to their uniform and it simply clashed with their usual purple jerseys. Black pants? Well, yeah, that’s what they usually wear. A purple on purple scheme? In the name of Color Rush, we could all appreciate that. A black on black scheme? That’s been done before and would have been welcomed.

But this? Yeah, the Ravens missed the mark here, and SB Nation really isn’t out of line by pointing it out. Hopefully the Ravens go back to their normal look for the final two regular season games, because they’re 0-1 with this disastrous take and Ravens fans have to hope it stays that way.

Week 14 Thursday Night Football Preview: What to Watch For

NFL top 5 games

The Week 14 Thursday Night Football showdown between the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals is not your run of the mill TNF contest. The two teams playing in front of the nation on Thursday night are near-locks for the NFC playoffs and at least on the surface, appear to be Super Bowl contenders.

There is a lot to consider in this game, as both the Vikings and Cardinals are still playing for first place in their respective divisions. Minnesota is currently tied with the Green Bay Packers atop the NFC North, but a loss would put them a game back. Arizona probably has the NFC West locked up at 10-2, but they still need to win at least two more games to officially fend off the Seattle Seahawks for the crown.

All things considered, it should be a fun and entertaining game. We won’t be graced with the Color Rush custom football uniforms in this game, (that comes next week), but the Cardinals and Vikings still have cool jerseys and logos and on paper this should be a tight contest. Let’s touch on the biggest things you’ll want to watch for:

No Defense?

When the 2015 NFL season started, there was little confusion as to what kind of defenses the Vikings and Cardinals were: good ones. Unfortunately, Arizona has been a little hit or miss during the second half of the season and Minnesota is slowly coming off the rails. It’s the Vikings we really have to worry about, as they’ll be missing some very key defensive starters in Harrison Smith, Anthony Barr and Linval Joseph already ruled out for this game. Smith’s absence opens the door to some deep shots for an already dangerous Arizona passing attack, Barr’s absence hurts Minnesota’s pass rush and Joseph’s absence could allow the Cardinals to run the ball more easily. Not good for the Vikings, is what we’re driving at.

All Day

Adrian Peterson couldn’t go “all day” last week, but if the Vikes stand a chance in this one, he’ll surely have to tonight. He stepped up in a big way two weeks ago against the Falcons, but he’s now shrunken twice recently against solid opponents. Will Peterson wilt in the face of the Cardinals, or will he be the reason why Minnesota gets a huge road win? That’s definitely a big reason why I’ll be tuning in live.

Air Strike

All those Vikings injuries make the mouth water because Arizona’s offense was already so potent, and now they’ll have a chance to really explode. Carson Palmer is a legit MVP candidate and he’s blessed with explosive weapons in Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown. Chances are Palmer has a big outing in this one and two or more of his receivers are heavily involved.

Teddy’s Test

On the other side of what could oddly end up being a bit of a shootout is Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater has shown some promise at times in his first two years in the league, but he’s also caved when under pressure. Anytime he’s faced a top-5 defense he’s lost and anytime the team’s fate is put in his hands, he usually comes up short. That’s been the case twice in the past three weeks, but it will definitely be worth watching to see if he can finally get the job done on a big stage.

Panthers Give Sneak Peek at Week 12 Color Rush Uniforms

Panthers NFL uniform

NFL fans are in for a lot of football come Thursday. Sure, Thanksgiving Day itself is cause for celebration and relaxation, but it also never hurts to get a whopping three pro football games on the schedule, either. The Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys are two of six teams performing on our beloved national holiday, and they’ll be taking the fun to a whole different level thanks to Nike’s Color Rush campaign with the league.

We got a sneak peek of the custom football uniforms when the Panthers hit the practice field this week, as they donned their blue pants. Carolina’s Twitter account took a snap shot of what we can prepare for, but we really only needed to see the previous two Color Rush games to have a pretty good idea.

The teams facing off each other in the two prior Color Rush clashes were all different colors, though, so it should be interesting to see how the Panthers and Cowboys take the field this Thursday. The game certainly won’t lack for intrigue apart from how their jerseys will look, of course. Tony Romo made his return to the field last week after missing seven weeks with a broken collarbone and immediately helped Dallas to a huge win. That win snapped an ugly 7-game skid without Romo, but kept the Cowboy’s faint playoff hopes alive and got them to 3-7.

Things get a little tougher in week 12, of course, as Romo and co. play host to the undefeated Panthers in front of the nation. Carolina can certainly afford to lose at 10-0, but they may have a perfect 16-0 record on their mind. Dallas will try to ruin that dream, while extending their own playoff hopes.

We can’t be sure which way that game will go, but with Color Rush taking the field yet again, we can probably expect a colorful showdown, one way or another.

Memphis Grizzlies Unveil Throwback Uniforms

Memphis Grizzlies Unveil Throwback Uniforms

The Memphis Grizzlies haven’t missed the boat this year when it comes to style and history. While the team has struggled to a slow start out of the gates in the early going of the 2015-16 NBA season, they’ve gotten healthier recently and also are starting to look a lot sharper. That was very much the case on Monday night, when they debuted their sweet Hardwood Classic Nights throwback uniforms. These custom basketball uniforms give Memphis a soulful, vintage look and if Monday’s game was any indication, they might give them some extra pep in their step, as well.

Memphis donned the bright red jerseys in a 122-114 thumping of the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night and will wear the new uni’s eight more times (five home games) this season. Memphis fans can’t wait, as the Grizz had been showing up lame more often than not to start the year, with their trademark defense seemingly nowhere to be found and their offense struggling more than ever.

Faith has been restored to a certain degree, and perhaps the Grizzlies’ new uniforms are to thank for it. They certainly put the “class” in Classic, as the bright red color combined with the cursive font says retro, all the way. It’s a great look for the now 6-6 Grizz, who have won three in a row and are slowly starting to look again like a true title contender.

Fans will get to see the Grizzlies in their new digs eight more times this season, with Memphis wearing the Christmas-y red jerseys five times on their home floor and three more times on the road. The next sighting comes fittingly in December, when the Grizz will take on the San Antonio Spurs. After that Grizzlies fans can plan to check the new jerseys out in live action in games versus the Heat, Knicks and Timberwolves at FedEx Forum.

It remains to be seen if Memphis can keep their recent streak going and if their new uni’s will have anything to do with it. Fans can’t be mad about the results so far, though.

Jets and Bills Get Colorful For Thursday Night Football

2015 Color Rush uniforms

We already touches on the NFL’s new Color Rush promotion last week, but on Thursday night, it actually finally arrives. Yahoo got a sneak peek of the sweet custom football uniforms the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets will be gracing on prime time television, in a game that was already going to be about as hyped as any week 10 NFL matchup.

The hype only grows louder now that both teams will be opting for the color on color scheme, which takes their bold team colors and gives fans a fun visual upgrade. The Bills could have gone in one of two directions, as they use white, blue and red colors. For the Color Rush scheme, they are going away from their usual blue to a bold red, which could really spice up an already heated matchup.

Rex Ryan heads back to the Meadowlands to face his former team for the first time since being relieved of his duties last year. Ryan took over the Bills this past summer and said he was going to make Buffalo into a group of “bullies”. He also declared that his spot as head coach of the Bills would be his last stop in the league. How long that lasts and how successful the Bills will be against the Jets on TNF, no one knows.

We know the Jets will be just as colorful, though, as they’re going all in on their bold green jerseys, which will be featured on both their jerseys and pants. Take a look and see the proposed color blast for yourself.

The cool thing is that this was going to be an intense rivalry game, no matter what. The 5-3 Jets and 4-4 Bills both are probably dead in the AFC East with the 8-0 New England Patriots ahead of them, so they’re basically battling it out for a wild card spot at this point. Throw in the Rex Ryan revenge factor and even the Ryan Fitzpatrick revenge factor (used to play for the Bills), and this game has hype for days.

It was already going to be a game worth watching, but the cool uniform change-up definitely adds to the allure.

NFL Supports Our Troops With Salute to Service

NFL supports troops

Just last week we were complaining about the NFL’s strict dress code and all of their harsh uniform rules. The NFL is this big, bad meany that won’t let players be individuals and support causes or promote anything positive. Then the league turns around and throws their support behind the past, present and former troops by giving them a visual salute heading into Veteran’s Day.

Well played, NFL. Well played.

While pro football’s take on uniforms is a bit annoying, their stand against breast cancer and with our nation’s troops shouldn’t be ignored. With no games schedule for Wednesday, the day we honor and show respect to those that have fallen, served or continue to serve, the league took time this past weekend to show their support in their NFL’s Salute to Service campaign.

Not just for show, this promotion donated $1,000 dollars to three of the league’s core non-profit partners – the Pat Tillman Foundation, Wounder Warriors Project and USO – for every point scored in games during the campaign.

That’s led to a whopping $658,000 in donations thanks to the league. And if that wasn’t cool enough, coaches and players were allows to accessorize and pay tribute by donning special camo gear.

This campaigning obviously brings custom football uniforms to a whole new level, and the league has been rolling this out for over a week now. The Salute to Service promotion has been running since November 1st, when the Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns faced off. It’s not going to be done anytime soon, either, as the league will be paying respects beyond Wednesday, with the final Salute to Service branded game coming on December 13th between the San Diego Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs.

NFL fans can see the camo gear live again tonight on Monday Night Football, as well, when the Chargers host the Chicago Bears.

It’s obviously cool to see the players and coaches being able to don camo apparel, but it’s even better to see the league supporting a great cause.

Like the camo accessories the coaches and players are wearing? Excited to see the NFL involved in a worthy cause? Express your thoughts in the comments below!

49ers Play Good, Look Better in Week 1 Win

48ers new baseball uniforms

The only thing better than the San Francisco 49ers week one performance on Monday Night Football was their new black uniforms. Colin Kaepernick didn’t score and wasn’t amazing, but he played within the offense and made the right decisions. That regressing defense that lost Patrick Willis and a litany of big names clearly still had bite, too, while running back Carlos Hyde looked to be an upgrade over the departed Frank Gore.

And those black and red 49ers uniforms. Those were just a thing of beauty.

Intimidation Game

Make no mistake about it, the San Francisco 49ers were sending a message in week one, and they did it right away from a visual perspective. That’s not to say the Minnesota Vikings were “scared” or even truly “intimidated” by how San Francisco looked, but the all black jersey and pants uniform with the bold red number coloring, capped off with the traditional gold Niners helmet certainly gave off the feel that this Niners team meant serious business.

No Talk

There had been a lot of chatter about all the key losses the 49ers suffered. Starting at the top with head coach Jim Harbaugh being let go and the Niners finishing just 8-8 a year ago, the outlook was more than a little bleak heading into 2015. In a crowded and brutal NFC West division, a team that lost their leader on the sidelines also lost their defensive leader on the field, as stud inside linebacker Patrick Willis decided to hang’em up.

Following Willis was his likely replacement Chris Borland, who also decided to call it quits. And then went defensive lineman Justin Smith. And then the team had to release troubled pass rusher Aldon Smith. Add in the losses of key veterans on offense such as Frank Gore and Michael Crabtree, and there might have been some validity to all of the concern.

Squashed Doubts

The Niners made quick work of silencing their critics in week one, however, as that sliding defense proved to be quite dominant in a 20-3 win. San Francisco’s run defense held all pro rusher Adrian Peterson to just 31 yards in his return to the field after a year of being away, while the 49ers pass defense made Teddy Bridgewater look rushed and ill prepared.

On the offensive side, Carlos Hyde looked like a seasoned pro en route to 168 rushing yards and two touchdowns – easily the best performance by any NFL running back in week one. Overall, the Niners weren’t necessarily perfect, but they leaned on the same philosophy that always brought them success in their recent playoff runs – play strong defense, run the ball and don’t make big mistakes.

Having one of the slickest looking custom football uniforms to start the year probably didn’t hurt, either. The Niners displayed some serious edge in their new digs, and whether it keeps up is anyone’s guess. It surely will be interesting to watch this team moving forward, however, as well as if they continue to specifically play at a high level when they’re wearing these sweet alternative uniforms.

2015 Fantasy Football: Top TE Sleepers to Target in Drafts

blue vs white and red football uniform

Our look at the top value picks in fantasy football drafts is nearing an end, as we come to the tight end position. Sleepers, steals and value picks are really on the same, as one way or another they tell you a player is going to do well, yet they’re under valued to some degree. The tight end position might be the easiest position to find value in this year – not because it’s the deepest – but because beyond Rob Gronkowski, no one knows what to expect.

Jimmy Graham, Jordan Cameron and Julius Thomas are all on new teams and could go either way, Greg Olsen is suddenly far and away Carolina’s only option and many other guys are coming off of down years or have a history of health concerns. That being said, the fact that people are scared to go all in on most of the tight end options means there is bound to be some ridiculous value in a lot of rounds. When you plan to go after your top tight end in your draft is totally up to you, but the following guys represent value in the rounds they’re currently being drafted in:

Julius Thomas (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Round 9

I get he’s on the Jaguars and he’s out the first four weeks (hand), but come on. The guy’s upside is obvious after scoring 24 touchdowns in Denver the past two years, while the Jaguars have visibly made strides on offense. Once back, he could end up being the steal of the draft at the tight end position.

Delanie Walker (Tennessee Titans) – Round 10

Walker certainly isn’t a sexy name, but we’re quickly forgetting that this guy was the 12th best tight end in fantasy football uniform in 2013 and finished 9th last year. He’s without a doubt a reliable top-15 guy, especially now that rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota is going to need him as a safety blanket. Walker doesn’t light the world on fire, but he’s a steady option that you can find in round 10.

Kyle Rudolph (Minnesota Vikings) and Zach Ertz (Philadephia Eagles) – Round 11

Rudolph is a beast that has been held back forever either by injuries or bad quarterback play. He’s now healthy, Teddy Bridgewater looks like the real deal and Norv Turner’s system can make tight ends into superheros. Rudy is on the cusp of his best season yet. Ertz is no pushover, either, as he flashed brilliance at times last year, and now in his third season in Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense could be ready to truly blow up.

Dwayne Allen (Indianapolis Colts) – Round 12

Coby Fleener is the sexier option for some reason, even though Allen is the better blocker and more put together player. Fleener did draw way more targets last year, but Allen is in a very explosive Colts offense, so he’s worth the risk this late.

Antonio Gates (San Diego Chargers) – Round 13

I get that Gates is old and will miss the first four games of the year due to suspension. But this is the #2 tight end in fantasy football of a year ago that we’re talking about. It’s true that LaDarcius Green could steal his thunder, but that’s nothing to worry about when you can take a crack at a potential top-5 option in round 13.

2015 Fantasy Football: Top WR Sleepers to Target in Drafts

custom blue football jersey

Fantasy football is all about value, particularly when it comes to successfully maneuvering through your fantasy league’s draft. Anyone can make good picks in the first two rounds or so, but once you get to the middle and late rounds, you need to know when and where to look to find the gems that will out-play their ADP (Average Draft Position). If you can’t, you’re playing a guessing game and will have to rely on your league’s waiver wire for support.

With other fantasy owners either having priority or a faster draw, that isn’t the best method for finding the hidden gems. Drafting them is. We can’t nail them all, but we sure can point out the value that’s blatantly obvious. We’ve already hit up the quarterback and running back positions, and now we take it to wide receivers to find the best steals throughout the draft:

Calvin Johnson (Detroit Lions) – Round 2

Megatron was the #1 overall pick for some in the past few years and still has the talent and role to be the top wide receiver in the game. Even with that being true, he’s going in round two in almost every draft. That’s just crazy.

Alshon Jeffery (Chicago Bears) – Round 3

Brandon Marshall is out of town, so Jeffery is a true #1 wide receiver on a team that should have to continue to throw the ball a ton. He’s a potential stud WR1, yet you can get him in the third round.

Jeremy Maclin (Kansas City Chiefs) – Round 4

Maclin blew up in Philly last year and now he’s back with the guy who drafted him. KC didn’t get any touchdowns to wide receivers last year, but Maclin has already scored twice this preseason. It’s starting to look like he could be a serious value pick.

Brandon Marshall (New York Jets) – Round 5

Marshall’s new scenery makes him somewhat questionable, but the talent and role remain. He’s being drafted like a borderline WR2 and he could still put up WR1 numbers. Draft accordingly.

DeSean Jackson (Washington Redskins) and Vincent Jackson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Round 6

Ditto here, as both Jacksons are elite talents in different ways and have huge roles. D-Jax probably carries the upside, but V-Jax is a red-zone menace. Now that both teams have arguable quarterback upgrades, both of these guys could crush their current ADP.

Steve Smith (Baltimore Ravens) – Round 7

Baltimore has no one to throw to that is proven beyond Steve Smith. He’s said this is his last season, so he’s bound to leave everything he has out on the field. Judging from 2014, that’s a good thing.

Mike Wallace (Minnesota Vikings) – Round 8

Kyle Rudolph never is healthy, Cordarrelle Patterson has been a bust and Charles Johnson is unproven. The speedy Wallace could have found the perfect home to return to stardom. He’s a solid WR2 at worst and you just might be finding a WR1 in round eight.

Anquan Boldin (San Francisco 49ers) – Round 9

Boldin clearly gets passed up routinely due to his age and the horror that has been going on in the Bay Area. However, he just keeps getting it done and the Niners only brought in Torrey Smith as competition. If anything, Smith’s ability to stretch the field should help Boldin, not hinder him.

Eric Decker (New York Jets) and Torrey Smith (San Francisco 49ers) – Round 10

This is insane value for two guys who could (and should) be rock solid WR2s in fantasy football. Decker loses some upside with Marshall in town, but he’s still going to see the ball plenty, while Smith is the deep threat for 49ers have been searching for.

Michael Floyd (Arizona Cardinals) and Pierre Garcon (Washington Redskins) – Round 11

Floyd is a top-10 talent that simply needs to stay healthy and also have Carson Palmer stay on the field. If that can happen, he can get 1,000 yards and close to 10 scores. Garcon led the league in receptions just two years ago and is a deep ball menace. Kirk Cousins under center should help him return disgusting value.

Jeff Janis (Green Bay Packers) – Round 13

Perhaps the steal of the entire draft at the position, Janis is just now starting to see his name plucked off draft boards due to the Jordy Nelson injury. Janis is a low risk/high reward option in a potent Packers offense.

2015 Fantasy Football: 10 Players to Avoid This Year

2015 Fantasy Football

Our tour around the NFL takes a stop in the NFC West, as we continue to rank the top starting quarterbacks in every division. Doing so has opened our eyes a bit on some teams and their current situations, especially how it could relate to their attempt to make it to the NFL playoffs.

In other words, it’s not easy to win if you don’t have things figured out under center. Let’s take a look at the four teams custom football jersey in the NFC West and rank their quarterback situations:

4. Nick Foles (St. Louis Rams)

It was just three years ago that Foles took the NFL by storm by throwing just 27 touchdowns to two interceptions. Those ridiculous numbers came crashing back down to earth in 2014, though, as Foles turned the ball over far more before having his season cut short by a collarbone injury. Now he’s in St. Louis and via the mixed results, we can’t be sure exactly what the Rams have under center. On one hand, Foles is a steady pocket passer who anticipates the rush well and displays solid arm strength. On the other, his accuracy can wane and he can make questionable decisions.

We’ll find out which version is the real Foles in 2015, but the good news is the Rams finally get a competent player under center after having to endure life without Sam Bradford (knee injuries) over the past two seasons. If Foles just stays on the field all year, St. Louis should be much better for it. That being said, Foles is new to this division and has arguably proven the least out of the four starting quarterbacks in the NFC West.

3. Colin Kaepernick (San Francisco 49ers)

Kaepernick could be argued as the top NFC West passer in terms of sheer talent and upside, while he’s also just one of two NFC West signal callers to appear in a Super Bowl. He didn’t win, though, and other than that has done little to suggest he’s the long-term answer under center for the Niners. Kap has certainly flashed elite running ability and has even dominated as thrower inside the pocket at times, but his inconsistency in that area has been very concerning. Playing in the brutal NFC West hasn’t helped one bit, but not being able to step up his game (or even perform at a moderate level) has really bogged down his overall rating.

Kaepernick has a shot to rebound in 2015 with a new head coach, a new weapon in Torrey Smith and more work on refining his footwork and timing. If he’s actually improved, he could make an argument to be #2 in this division. For now, though, he’s taken a step back.

2. Carson Palmer (Arizona Cardinals)

Palmer hasn’t been in a Super Bowl and actually has just one playoff appearance under his belt. He also shredded his knee for the second time in his career in 2014 and set to be 36 years old in December, his best days could easily be far behind him. He was fantastic as a starter in 2014, though, and before he went down he had a surprisingly potent Cardinals team looking like legit title contenders. Coming out of the NFC West, that’s saying something.

If Palmer can return to form and stay healthy in 2015, he could potentially pick up where he left off and earn this #2 overall spot in the NFC West. Due to his ability as a pocket passer and the system he’s in, we like his odds.

1. Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks)

There can only be one top quarterback in the NFC West and it’s an easy call to make. Russell Wilson is young but he’s already proven his worth in Seattle, as he’s made it to two Super Bowls and won one in his first three seasons. Seattle should once again be a top contender to win it all in 2015, and the elusive, play-making Wilson is probably still the biggest reason why.

Wilson is still waiting to get paid and continues to be vastly underrated by many, but few package mobility, running ability and down field passing like Wilson. He’s even firmly established himself as a sound pocket passer and has never falled below a 63% completion rate. There isn’t much to hate about his cerebral approach to the game and it’s not crazy to think he’ll be even better in his fourth season.

Think our ranking of the four NFC West starting quarterbacks is all jacked up? Let us hear your list in the comments below!
