USC at Stanford, Sept. 17 – College Football Matchup

College football matchup 2016

During his first season as permanent coach, Clay Helton led USC to a discouraging, if not anticipated, defeat against the defending national champion, Alabama, in Arlington, Texas. Then, the following week, Helton and the team were met with a Week 3 trip to The Farm. With road games against Arizona, Utah, Washington, and UCLA following their game against Stanford, a 1-2 start will likely lead to concern over Helton’s capabilities.

Last year, Stanford beat USC in a 41-22 Pac-12 championship game, during which Christian McCaffrey amassed 461 all-purpose yards. McCaffrey will now be up for his first Heisman showcase opportunity. The Stanford-USC game may be a cross-division matchup, but it also marks a key stretch for Stanford, who will then travel to UCLA and Washington. If the Cardinals want to prove that they are a contender for the playoffs and the Pac-12 favorites, a win in this game is a must.

NFL Throwback Jerseys: Our Top 10

Top 10 NFL Jerseys throwback

We all love a good throwback jersey. Whoever thought up the idea of those AFL legacy jerseys for the 2009 season deserves a medal. Never has the throwback been better served! Thankfully there is still some fine retro quality out there today, but now we’re going to give a rundown of our top 10 throwback custom football jerseys of all time.

Chicago Bears: The 40s

NFL Throwback Jerseys

The Bears have always been a bit of a retro team in many ways. Whatever their current uniform happens to be, it always looks like a classic. But still, this 1940s throwback is always a welcome change. And in order to get round the draconian NFL rules on helmets, they make their throwback look that bit more authentic by dropping the decals from their regular-season helmets.

San Diego Chargers: 1963

NFL Throwback Jerseys

This one went down so well when they brought it back that it didn’t take long for it to become the official alternate jersey for the organisation. So does this actually count as a throwback? Well seen as it looks so darn good, we’ll make an exception!

Washington Redskins: 1994

NFL Throwback Jerseys

This is a great uniform, and never better than when they first reintroduced it in 2012. It was only in 2012 that they were allowed to use the helmets with a matte finish that made them look like real leather. For whatever reason the NFL then decided to prevent any teams from changing their helmet during the season, so they were then forced to wear the retro jersey with their modern-day helmets. Sacrilege!

LA Rams: The 80s

NFL Throwback Jerseys

Now the Rams have moved back to LA, it is a good time to be talking about a throwback jersey. This was a lot more bright and colourful than the Rams’ recent regular season efforts. And the added bonus is that whatever the NFL helmet police might try, the current helmets go well with the retro jersey, so no harm done.

Dallas Cowboys: The 60s

NFL Throwback Jerseys

This is all about the simplicity. It doesn’t try too hard. And the blue star atop the cream helmet just looks so darn classy! Sadly, the Cowboys were only able to wear it a few times before the NFL put their size 9s on banned the use of throwback helmets during the season. It didn’t deter the Cowboys from rocking it out with their current helmets though – they’re still doing it to this day.

Philadelphia Eagles: 1979

NFL Throwback Jerseys

The bright green and white gives a really crisp look. It’s timeless as much as it’s retro.

Atlanta Falcons: The 90s

NFL Throwback Jerseys

It feels a bit rough on the 1966 jersey to not have that on the list. It’s better than most of the other throwbacks in the NFL, but unluckily it is pipped at the post by the Falcons’ effort from the 90s. The modern-day jersey isn’t all that different actually, but the reverse of colors is so so effective.

New England Patriots: 1984

NFL Throwback Jerseys

The proliferation of red kinda makes this retro jersey more patriotic. There just seems to be more glory in the red. The overall feel of the Patriots uniform hasn’t changed much down the years, but this reversal of color is most welcome.

Buffalo Bills: 1965

NFL Throwback Jerseys

This is all about the bison on the helmet. That standing bison seems so much better than the modern-day charging bull. The rest of the uniform is pretty similar to the Bills jersey of today, so this is yet another retro effort that has been blunted by the NFL’s outlawing of alternate helmets. It has made the standing bison a thing of the past, and not a thing of the past that you’re able to bring back on special occasions!

Houston Oilers: The 80s

NFL Throwback Jerseys

You can still see loads of these being rocked out at Tennessee Titans home games. It’s not as if the franchise only just moved over either…it’ll be 20 years this year since the Oilers ceased to be the Oilers, but the sentiment about this jersey remains. The oil platform was always an iconic image, and those hints of red really help bring the look to life.

Florida at Tennessee, Sept. 24 – College Football Matchup

College football matchup 2016

While he may have led Florida in their eleventh straight win against Tennessee, that accomplishment was about the only one achieved by Jim McEwan during his first season with FSU.

The rivalry between the two teams has waned ever since the Vols beat the Gators several years and four coaches ago. Tennessee’s program has seen its fair share of recent changes, especially with Butch Jones looking to steadily improve the zoos programs. Does it surprise anyone that their football uniforms are so different this year?

College Football Championship: Alabama vs. Clemson Preview

College Football Championship: Alabama vs. Clemson Preview

The College Football Championship game arrives on Monday night, putting the finishing touches on the second ever College Football Playoff. Friends and colleagues Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney will face off in the national title game, as the undefeated (14-0) Clemson Tigers try to take down the Alabama Crimson Tide (13-1) and end with a perfect season en route to a national title.

If the Tigers can pull off the win over Alabama, they’d deliver college football’s first 15-0 run. While that’d make history and would be a fun ending to a crazy season for Clemson, it may not necessarily be likely with Alabama being the more experienced team and entering as the betting favorite.

So, who wins? Let’s break down some of the key players and situations of the college football title game to help us pick the winner:

Heisman X-Factors

DeShaun Watson is the ticket to a win for Clemson, just as has been the case all year, while running back Derrick Henry is probably the answer for Alabama on offense. We have two Heisman candidates facing off in this one, as Henry won the award in December and Watson was a contender all year for the award and was even a finalist.

While it’s debatable whether or not Henry was more deserving, it’s pretty obvious that both of these guys are the heart and soul of their respective team. For Clemson, Watson brings a dual threat under center and makes their up-tempo offense one to fear, as he can kill defenses in a number of ways. Henry, on the other hand, can also control the pace of the game, punish defenses with his bruising style and also run right past them due to his explosive speed. There’s little doubt that both will be heavily involved in the outcome for either side.

The Trenches

The harsh reality is that this game is bound to be won or lost in the trenches, as is the case with most football games when you’re playing for all of the marbles. Alabama has a stacked defense and is specifically a problem up front on the defensive line. Clemson has a very capable offensive line, but it’s rather likely they won’t be able to have their way in terms of running the ball, while DeShaun Watson may end up being under constant pressure.

The idea here is that Clemson spreads things out offensively and relies on a dual threat quarterback and a largely finesse offense. The Crimson Tide are much more physical on both sides of the ball, but one of their main weaknesses under Nick Saban at times has been containing elusive quarterbacks and keeping them from extending plays. Their struggles a few years ago against Johnny Manziel showcased this at it’s highest point, and now they have a similar matchup with Watson, who is even more explosive than Manziel ever was. Whether or not the Crimson Tide can shut him down early could be rather key in the pace of this game.

Coaching Duel

Nick Saban is a legend and no one will debate that he already is one of the greatest college football coaches ever – if not the best already. A title win this year would probably earn him that title for sure, as he’d secure a fifth championship (one short of Bear Bryant’s record of six). Doing so may not be easy necessarily, as Dabo Swinney has an unorthodox approach and Saban himself has even admitted that he’s been a bit of a “trail blazer” and that his style keeps the opposition on their toes.

The Winner

A classic clash between a seasoned veteran of the game and a younger up and comer makes for good hype and could make for an even better chess match. The stronger bet is the wiser Saban, but the young vs. old or student vs. master story-line is alive and well in this one.

Ultimately, Alabama just does seem to be the better, more balanced team. Their defense is more talented and more physical, while their running game sets the tone for their entire offense. Their coaching is also far more experienced and proven at a high level. Talent and coaching usually win out, but there has to be a shadow of a doubt in some people’s minds that Clemson, at a perfect 14-0, could just have football uniforms a better overall team and maybe even be a team of destiny.

I’m open to both being very possible, but from a logical perspective, this is Alabama’s title to lose.

Pick: Alabama 31, Clemson 21

5 Teams That Should Consider Hiring Chip Kelly

Football players on the pitch

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was a controversial NFL figure over the past two years. He led the Eagles to two consecutive 10-6 runs to begin his tenure, then cut loose numerous star players in an attempt to make his roster “in his image”. It didn’t work out as planned in 2015, and this week it led to his firing.

While Kelly getting handed the pink slip wasn’t a total shock due to such a crazy off-season, it’s an odd move for a guy who won the NFC East in his first year at the helm and produced two winning seasons in three tries. All of this, also, he did without ever having his own hand-picked franchise quarterback.

Kelly certainly came up short in some areas, but he’s already admitted he wants to stick in the NFL ranks and could be on many team’s short list if they end up making a move for a new head coach. Some spots would make a lot more sense than others, though. Let’s break down the top five:

Tennessee Titans

This makes the most sense, as the Titans canned Ken Whisenhunt in the middle of the year and Mike Mularkey has never been the answer anywhere he’s gone. The opening is there to be had, but the big thing that connects the dots is that Kelly coached Titans franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota at Oregon. After failing to land him in last year’s draft, the writing on the wall could have him in Tennessee running his offense with the guy perfectly made for it.

Miami Dolphins

Miami fired Joe Philbin earlier this year and is in a similar situation as Tennessee, as they have a decent interim coach in Dan Campbell but it’s tough to know if he can be a long-term answer. It doesn’t seem like it, since the Fins won two games immediately after he took over, but they’ve tailed off considerably ever since. That could have Miami looking for someone who can best maximize beleaguered quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who some point to as the reason why the Dolphins can’t take it to the next level. Tannehill’s athleticism could actually be a perfect fit in Kelly’s up-tempo system, so if the Titans job isn’t open, perhaps Kelly would see this as the perfect fallback option.

Cleveland Browns

Kelly’s system is at it’s best when it has an athletic quarterback who can push the tempo and roll out read-option plays at will, so if Tennessee and Miami want to go in a different direction, maybe going to Cleveland and getting the most out of Johnny football uniforms is in order. Kelly did at one time recruit Manziel to play at Oregon, so there is an untapped connection here. The Browns have yet to cut ties with head coach Mike Pettine, but rumors suggest GM Ray Farmer is out and Pettine could be close behind.

San Francisco 49ers

Jim Tomsula has been the perfect stop-gap answer between what was a great head coach in Jim Harbaugh and whoever it is that eventually takes over the 49ers full-time, but keeping him on as “the guy” seems like a mistake. It wouldn’t be shocking to see San Francisco move on from Tomsula after one unspectacular season, and that could be to go get the available Kelly. With two athletic quarterbacks in place in Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick, Kelly would have some talent to work with to try to maximize his system.

New York Giants

Eli Manning wouldn’t really fit what Kelly does, but there could be an opening in the Big Apple is the G-Men finally decide to fire Tom Coughlin. Coughlin helped get Big Blue two Super Bowl championships, so the Giants brass has remained patient with him. However, four seasons of missing the playoffs may have taken their toll. Kelly wouldn’t really be the perfect fit here, but it should would be interesting to see him move to another team inside the division.

Got a better idea as to where Kelly could wind up in 2016 or think he returns to college football? Let us know in the comments below!

2016 College Football Playoff Preview and Predictions

College football playoff preview and predictions

The 2015 college football season culminates in 2016, when the four best teams compete in the second ever College Football Playoff. We even have some new football uniform also faces this year, as Clemson, Michigan State and Oklahoma have all earned their way into the promised land, while Nick Saban’s (Alabama) Crimson Tide return for the second time to try to take back the national title.

Alabama makes for the only team in the history of the College Football Playoff to make multiple appearances in the small tournament, and even though that’s a short history, it’s still an interesting narrative. Ranked as the #2 team in the College Football Playoff bracket, the Crimson Tide will be tasked with taking on the Michigan State Spartans. If they can win, they can get back to the national title game for the first time since winning it in 2012.

While Alabama’s run is a fun story-line, this year’s College Football Playoff is not without controversy, as many college football fans felt scorned with their favorite (and arguably deserving) teams being left out of the mix. Still, everything is set up for quite the dramatic finish. Let’s break down both games and see who is slated to become the next college football champion:

#1 Clemson Tigers vs. #4 Oklahoma Sooners

It’s tough to knock the Clemson Tigers getting the top seed in this year’s College Football Playoff, as they went a perfect 13-0 on the year and own impressive wins over Notre Dame, Florida State and North Carolina. They’ve had a fantastic run behind dual threat passer Deshaun Watson, who was a Heisman finalist and averaged over 400 total yards per game on the season. Watson will once again be key on December 31st, when the Tigers try to stay undefeated by knocking off Bob Stoops’ Sooners.

As great as Clemson has been, it’d be foolish to over-look Oklahoma, who were a strong 12-1 on the year, with their only loss coming against Texas in a close game. That loss was fairly incriminating in many folk’s minds in regards to Oklahoma not deserving a spot in this tournament, but their 12-1 run still speaks for itself. Any doubt will likely be cast aside in this contest, as a Sooners upset over the perceived best team in the nation would validate them being voted into the College Football Playoff.

That’s not likely to happen, however. Watson is just too big of a force to handle, while Oklahoma has been better known for their elite offense than a studly defense. It’s possibly they could find a way to pull out a win in a shootout, but they’ll definitely be fighting uphill in this one.

Pick: Clemson 40, Oklahoma 31

#2 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. #3 Michigan State Spartans

It’s highly arguable that Alabama is the best team in college football and the favorite to win this tourney, as they own just one loss on the year against a good Ole Miss team (at the time ranked 16th in the nation). Record aside, Alabama is led by one of the greatest coaches in history in Nick Saban and fields a borderline NFL-level defense. They also boast a strong rushing attack led by Heisman-winner, Derrick Henry.

Michigan State is no slouch, though, as they also lost just once in 2015 (a fluky 39-38 loss to conference rivals, Nebraska). Led by quarterback Connor Cook, the Spartans sport a strong offense, but are best known for pulling games out and controlling games at their own desired tempo. Doing either of those things against such a balanced Alabama squad should be too much to ask, however. Ultimately, the Crimson Tide are on a mission and have the better defense. They should move on to the title game.

Pick: Alabama 31, Michigan State 24

We’ll press pause at this point and return at a later date to asses the national championship game. For now, we can all get excited for these two games, the special custom football uniforms being worn just for this tourney, and the potential of an Alabama vs. Clemson title game.

Think the first two games shake down a different way? Let us hear about it in the comments below!

9 Teams That Could Trade For Johnny Manziel

Johnny Mainziel trade rumors

The NFL has many disgruntled stars that simply don’t work out in their current environments for whatever reason. We’ve discussed guys like Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick in past articles and thanks to some recent changes, Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel’s hat has been tossed into the ring, as well. It’s still possible the Browns keep backing the party boy and he ends up being their franchise passer, but his recent demotion makes that rather unlikely.

While his act may have worn thin in Cleveland, Manziel is still a marketable name that can and will sell both NFL jerseys , customizable football jerseys, and tickets. He also is still an interesting young talent that could easily develop into a very solid starting quarterback. That could have him on the move via trade following the season. But where could he go? We’ve got nine solid potential landing spots for the Johnny Manziel rumors to stop in:

Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones loves him some Johnny Football. Not only did the controversial owner think long and hard about drafting Manziel in the first round two years ago, but Manziel is from Texas and went to school there. If Manziel is done in Cleveland, the writing could be on the wall that a return home is in the works.

New York Jets

Ryan Fitzpatrick has been solid in 2015 but he’s not a long-term answer and it seems the Jets aren’t sold on Geno Smith, either. A talented defensive-minded team with a strong running game could be a competent quarterback away from competing for a title. Saying that’s Manziel could be a reach, but it’s not crazy to think he’d be the short and long-term fix the Jets have been looking for.

Houston Texans

If not Dallas, why not Houston? The Texans didn’t seem overly enamored with Manziel when they passed on him with the #1 overall pick two years ago, but if the price is right, they should consider the move. They haven’t had a true franchise passer since Matt Schaub and could use a jolt in the offense. Manziel hypothetically fits their system, but it is certainly worth wondering if they’d take a chance on another immature talent after parting ways with Ryan Mallett mid-season.

Kansas City Chiefs

Alex Smith seems entrenched in Kansas City, but it could be time for a change in what looks to be a second straight losing season for the Chiefs. Kansas City does have some talent behind Smith, but Andy Reid’s offense asks for an athletic passer who can take shots down the field. Smith has never brought the latter to the table, but Manziel certainly would.

Philadelphia Eagles

This one might hinge on Chip Kelly staying in town, but it doesn’t have to. Kelly actually originally recruited Manziel at Oregon and the athletic passer could be perfect for his up-tempo scheme. Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez have been utter failures and Manziel could give the offense a fresh, much-needed spark. Even if Kelly is on his way out of town, the Eagles sorely lack a real presence under center and could make a big move to land a talented passer with some upside.

Washington Redskins

RG3 is done and Kirk Cousins has delivered nothing but mixed reviews as a starter. If Cousins can’t finish the 2015 season strong, he could be on his way out. Whether or not head coach Jay Gruden gets another vote of confidence may not matter, as Manziel has potential and would also help sell tickets. The Redskins will probably be in the market for a quarterback upgrade and in a trade with the Browns, they could unload their own troubled passer in RG3.

Chicago Bears

This might be the best spot for both teams involved, as the Bears have been rumored to want to part ways with Jay Cutler and his hefty salary. Cutler has actually cut down on the turnovers this year and looks more the part of a seasoned veteran passer, but if first-year head coach John Fox wants to move on, trading Cutler for Manziel wouldn’t be the worst way to do so. On the flip-side, Cutler could enter Cleveland and give the Browns their best established arm talent since, well, ever.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams are a fairly well coached team with a stud running back and an elite defense. The one thing they’re missing? Competency out of the quarterback position. This might be my favorite landing spot for Manziel, as his speed could be showcased on the turf in St. Louis and with their beastly running game and defense, he wouldn’t be asked to cure all that ails them right away. Jeff Fisher could be on his last leg as head coach, too, so he may need a splashy move under center to save his job.

San Francisco 49ers

Last but not least are the Niners, who appear to be very much done with Colin Kaepernick. Blaine Gabbert isn’t really a long-term option, either, which could have them looking outside of the franchise for their next quarterback. Odds are they opt to get that guy via the 2016 NFL Draft, but Manziel could be a potential upgrade. Kaepernick could be included in the trade and the Browns could have a new passer to come in and compete with Josh McCown.

Think there is a better spot for Manziel or sold he stays with the Browns? Let us hear it in the comments below!

Analyzing Top NFL Player Sales vs. Success

Top NFL Player Sales vs. Success

Sometimes it’s good to reflect. One weird thing I was thinking about lately is the oddity of popularity versus reality. For example, Tim Tebow is a great guy and was super controversial in the NFL and hey, he even won in college, but he just wasn’t a very good pro passer. Yet he crushed in jersey sales. Even when he wasn’t in Denver, he still crushed in custom football jerseys sales and he wasn’t even a starter.

Tebow isn’t alone, though. It happens with rookies and it happens with other polarizing figures like Johnny Manziel. These guys come with lofty expectations, quickly rose to a certain level and/or are just exciting players that make you want to buy their jersey. But how much does that popularity roll over into the real NFL world? How much success do the guys that are able to profit off their brand actually have?

Longevity is one concern, to be sure, and one look at someone like Robert Griffin III will tell you that. He was a monster sensation as a rookie, hurt his knee, and has never been the same. Now he’s not even playing and Kirk Cousins is a thing.

But he’s also a great example. RG3 was immensely popular, and now he’s not. He was super successful for a short amount of time, and now he’s not. So, how much does the popularity and success correlate?

Not that much.

It probably shouldn’t shock anyone that way back in May when the NFLPA released their data for player sales, that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady topped the league. He had the highest selling jersey through the first couple of weeks at NFLshop.com, too. To what you end up attributing that is up to you, but it could be for several reasons: he’s good, the Patriots are good, he’s been around forever, he was in the news with his constant legal battle with the league, the list goes on.

I think the biggest thing is relevancy and when you add the statistics, the winning and all of that stuff, it cements it even more. Brady at the top, no one can argue that.

But the list gets interesting from there. Right away at #2 was…Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was even on a downward slide, as the 49ers missed the playoffs last year and his play regressed sharply just one year after making the Super Bowl (and almost winning!).

Now Kaepernick isn’t even playing, as he got benched for Blaine Gabbert.

There is a specific case where player popularity drowns out success and real life impact. Because right behind him was Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers. Those guys make sense. They’re young, marketbale, productive and have won a Super Bowl.

Behind them in 5th place was a living legend in Peyton Manning. Also in decline, there is plenty of good reason why Manning wasn’t #1 over Brady or over any of these guys. Good reason for why he was over Kap? Not really, but this is kind of the point.

Right behind Manning in 6th is one of two defensive players in the group – J.J. Watt. Watt’s Texans have been in decline and he’s a one-man wrecking crew. Naturally that’s impressive as he comes of as a living, breathing Hulk and has to “do it all” himself.

Rounding out the list is Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman, 2014 phenom Odell Beckham Jr., Titans rookie passer Marcus Mariota and Buccaneers rookie passer Jameis Winston.

What does this say? This tells us that, with half of this list being players that are unknown commodities or unproven winners in the NFL, popularity and prison of the moment thinking rules over actual success.

We already knew that in a sense, though. But it’s right there for us to see that player sales are more built on hopes and ideals than actual production or any real merit. That’s not a bad thing, either. And it’s nice to see legends like Brady and Manning stand the test of time, or true winners like Wilson and Rodgers crack the top 5. It is certainly interesting to note unproven players taking over the popularity of the league and leaving still popular and productive guys like Rob Gronkowski (14th), Clay Matthews (19th), Marshawn Lynch (24th) and Demaryius Thomas (50th).

The best part, though? Is Tim Tebow was 31st in player sales when that info was first released and no one even knew for sure if he’d play in the NFL in 2015.

Got your own interesting finding when it comes to player sales and popularity? Let us hear about it in the comments below!

Steelers Bring Back Bumblebee Uniforms in Week 8

Steelers Bumblebee Uniforms

The Pittsburgh Steelers hadn’t been looking amazing over the past several weeks. Star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went down with a knee injury back in week three, and while the team stayed afloat with a 2-2 record while he was away, they still didn’t seem like themselves. That’s to be expected when you lose a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and rotate between the likes of Michael Vick and Landry Jones.

Pittsburgh got Big Ben back this past week, and although the Steelers lost both the game and stud rusher Le’Veon Bell, they at least excited fans with their uniforms. That’s right, the Steelers busted out that “love it or hate it” Bumblebee look, where they look more like a band of pirates that morphed into 1920’s Alcatraz escapees.

All jokes aside, it’s really cool anytime teams sport something other than their normal uni’s and Pittsburgh’s custom football uniforms definitely stray from the norm.

These particular uni’s pay homage to some serious history, as the bumblebee/prison break look stems from the team’s 1934 uniforms. Pittsburgh actually unleashed these in their 80th season and have worn them four times since 2012. Per ProFootballTalk.com, they wore them against the Redskins and Ravens in 2012, against the Lions in 2013 and last year against the Colts. This past weekend they donned them against a division rival for the second time ever – this time the 7-0 Bengals – and they ended up losing.

That’s a mild surprise, as Pittsburgh’s black and yellow striped uni’s have brought them good fortune in the past. In fact, in the four previous games they wore their bumblebee uni’s, Pittsburgh was a solid 3-1. That record is even better when you consider their lone loss was a 13-10 TNF battle with the hated Ravens. Oh, and Ben Roethlisberger was too hurt to play in that game – one where Byron Leftwich was the starter.

Needless to say, the Steelers were pretty good in these uniforms heading into Sunday (dropped 51 points on the Colts last year in them, no less), yet couldn’t get the job done at Heinz Field in their cool looking digs.

It’s not always about how you look, though. The good news is Big Ben is back and healthy and the team does still have veteran running back DeAngelo Williams to fall back on in the wake of Bell’s injury. And this recent loss aside, we definitely will cross our fingers that we’ll be seeing the particular alternates at least one more time in 2015.

Bills Wear Blue on Blue Uniforms in Week 6 Loss

Bills wear blue on uniforms

The Buffalo Bills had a rough week six. Starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor sat out with a knee sprain, wide receiver Sammy Watkins suffered a foot injury and the Bills fell at home to the undefeated Cincinnati Bengals, 34-21.

To make matters worse, Buffalo got ripped up in the media for their custom football uniforms they chose to wear this past weekend. The team rolled with the “blue on blue” uniform, with blue jerseys and blue pants. Generally the team will wear blue jerseys, but rarely blue all around. In fact, the Bills donned the all blue look for just the second time ever this past week, as they debuted the new look for the first time just last season.

For The Win’s take suggest they never should have tried the all blue scheme out, to begin with. Chris Chase voiced his very strong stance on the all blue uni’s, suggesting that Bills uniforms typically look pretty good, but in this case, it’s a big miss for Buffalo.

Chase broke it down through an entire feature length article, but you can probably get the jist in this quote alone:

“They look like every second-grader’s favorite crayon, the one that gets worn down to a nub far too early and you’re stuck having to use other, darker- and lighter-hued blues the rest of the school year. Papa Smurf thinks it’s too blue.”

Yikes. Chris Chase doesn’t like the Bills alternate uniforms. That much, we’re sure of.

The problem is, I don’t see what the issue is. Buffalo rolls with blue jerseys already and the solid, same color approach is one numerous teams take with their alternate jerseys – quite often, I might add. And while it’s possible it’s not the desired shade of blue for everyone out there, I don’t know if it deserved a tongue lashing, such as the one Chase dishes out.

Truth be told, Buffalo’s blue on blue jerseys aren’t half bad. It’s unfortunate that they couldn’t help the Bills get a win, but the uniforms probably didn’t deserve the negative attention they ended up getting.

Think the Bills all blue uniforms got too much criticism? Did you even like them? Tell us in the comments below!
