New York Mets vs. Kansas City Royals: Who Has the Better MLB Uniforms?

New York vs Kansas City Royals uniform

The New York Mets and Kansas City Royals are already winners. They’ve enjoyed successful runs through the 2015 MLB season and are competing for the league’s title in this year’s World Series. While the Royals have the upper hand right now with a commanding 2-0 lead, the series does shift back to Shea Stadium, where things could get really interesting.

Still, an assumption can be made one way or another – unless you’re a Mets fan – that the Royals, at least to this point, have been the better team.

Kansas City certainly has put in the work to earn that label. They fell just short of winning it all in last year’s World Series, while they ended the 2015 MLB regular season with the most wins (95) in the American League. That was still good for fourth in all of baseball, too.

So, whatever. The Royals are probably the better team. They have that to hang their hat on. Big. Deal.

But do they have the better uniform between these two squads? As a custom baseball uniforms producer, we think that is the real question. And hey, even if it’s not, it’s at least interesting to compare. Mets and Royals uniforms couldn’t be more different. Sure, they both have blue in them, but it’s a totally different shade, only one has orange and the uniform variety isn’t the same, either.

Let’s break down all of the Royals and Mets uniforms and pick a winner:

Kansas City Royals

SportsLogos.net does a pretty detailed breakdown of Kansas City’s history when it comes to logos, uniforms and overall design. The main take away? They’re a timeless classic. That’s without a doubt what makes KC pop out when they take the field, because they always scream traditional and throwback.

Yet, even with a timeless, retro look, the Royals still appear modern and fresh.

Of course, there was a time when the Royals stepped outside the lines and tried weird stuff with a vest cut-off look and black alternate jerseys. That wasn’t great and that went away from what makes them awesome now.

The other big kicker for Kansas City is the versatility in their baseball uniforms. Their alternates tend to be just as good as their regular jerseys, from the cream grey on grey, to the powder blue jersey and cap. But it’s all still always tied together by the cursive “Royals” across the chest and the sharp “KC” as the logo. The Royals are one of the best teams in the league and looking sharp and traditional, while also not boring everyone to death.

New York Mets

SportsLogos.net did it again here with the Mets, and for that, we thank them. They didn’t do it for us, but still.

A quick glance through their findings screamed one thing rather loudly: Mets uniforms aren’t that great. At least they weren’t for quite a while, as they looked like a sorry rip-off of the Yankees, but with a terrible logo and orange in their uniform.

This writer actually dug the cool 1984 alternate uniforms, but sadly they were dropped after that season and New York went away from alternate jerseys for a ridiculous 14 years. Considering that uniform actually was as retro as it gets (in a good way, mind you) and far better than anything they had to that point, I’d say that was a mistake.

The Mets redeemed themselves down the road, though, as their logo got a little bolder and more crisp (we do mean A LITTLE), but in the end it was more of a refreshing look. There was then the black jersey phase, some camo appearances and now where we are today, where the Mets have a nice bold blue jersey for many of their road games.

The classic pinstripe white uni still is the one the Mets lean on the most, though, and at the very worst it pays homage to New York’s history.

The Winner

It’s not hard and it needn’t be debated. Kansas City has the better uniforms, far and away. The Mets are out-dated in comparison and don’t have an edgy or modern look in any way. It’s great that the Mets stick to their roots and kept a familiar look, but it’s just unfortunate it couldn’t be as vibrant as the Royals. We’re not saying that’s why the Royals are up two games to none, but we’re not not saying that, either.

Think we got it wrong and the Mets have the better uniforms? Let us hear it in the comments below!

Ranking the Uniforms in the 2015 MLB Playoffs

MLB uniforms ranking

The 2015 MLB playoffs aren’t going totally as planned. Some expert picks have bowed out already and the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets have to this point made quick work of the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs. Before we know it, both could be advanced and suddenly we’re talking about the World Series.

It hasn’t happened yet, though, so there is plenty of time for another jaw-dropping performance or three, a crazy comeback or two and to take in the beautiful custom baseball uniforms these teams display on a nightly basis. Sure, these four teams are known more for their pitching and hitting at this point, but they also sport some of the best baseball uniforms in the league. At least they do sometimes.

4. Chicago Cubs

We’ve got nothing against the Cubs. Their MLB uniforms aren’t even “bad” either, they just are the worst of this crop. Call them out-dated or too old fashioned. Call them what you will, but Chicago’s uniforms just aren’t cutting it when compared to the other teams still in the race for the World Series. We like their blue jerseys, but that’s where the fondness ends. Hey, at least they’re not in our bottom five for the entire league.

3. New York Mets

New York really is only one step up above the Cubs. Maybe their players make it look better with more consistent offense, but it’s tough to deny how good the blue and orange goes together. The Mets keep their uniforms pretty classic, as well, from the white uniforms with the old school pinstripes to the solid blue jerseys with the orange striping down the middle. New York doesn’t make it into our top two, but they’re close. And what do they care? They could be moving onto the World Series!

2. Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto’s uniforms do a really good job of giving off a modern look without being too edgy or over the top. Perhaps what is best about the Blue Jays uniforms is their versatility, as their solid dark blue jerseys rock, while their soft blue alternates also look good. They even look good in white, while their alternate grey on grey look also looks sharp. The Jays may not be moving on up to the World Series this year, but they’ve looked great en route to this point and also boast one of the best logos in the league.

1. Kansas City Royals

Like pop singer Lorde says, not everyone can be royal. And none of the other MLB playoff teams can touch their jerseys, either. It’s true, as the Royals do an awesome job of looking modern and in style, yet keep a traditional look. Better yet, they carry the same killer versatility Toronto does with a strong lineup of uniforms that include a slick grey on grey alternate and a powder blue jersey. Most importantly, their solid color scheme is what keeps it all together, while the simple yet sophisticated lettering of the cursive “Royals”, plus their cool “KC” logo gives them one of the better overall looks across the league. It’s probably not much of a coincidence that they top our list and could be headed to the World Series, either. Heck, maybe they’ll just go win it all.

Who Will Win the 2015 MLB World Series?

2015 MLB World series

Predictions can be a real pain. The actual act of predicting isn’t. But looking back and seeing where you went wrong, now that can be a bummer. Take our 2015 MLB playoff calls, for example. We’re now just one full round away from this year’s World Series and just one of our picks remain alive. The Mets.

Hey, a 50% ratio isn’t bad, and neither is getting 7 out of 8 divisional round teams right. For that, we deserve some minor recognition.

Eh, maybe not. The point is, it wasn’t easy to get that many calls right, yet here we are, a round away from the final series, and we very well could still miss completely.

Our prediction was the Mets winning it all by sending the Astros home. New York is still in the mix, but they first have to take down the upstar Chicago Cubs. And if they can get past them and reach the World Series, either the Toronto Blue Jays or Kansas City Royals could be one heck of an out.

Do-overs can be a ton of fun, and while we’ll stick to our guns with the Mets on the one side, we get a chance to make the call on the other. Kansas City already has the early 1-0 lead in this series, and even though it might look like the safe or easy call, we have to side with them to get back to the World Series for the second year in a row.

Kansas City has unfinished business on the brain, and we can’t help but buy into that notion. Maybe it’s that they have more experience or we just don’t trust Toronto’s pitching. Or perhaps its that Toronto has one of the worst-performing custom baseball uniforms around. Call it a gut feeling, but any way you shake it, we like the Royals to sneak past the Jays to get into the World Series again.

That being said, we still like the Mets more than anyone. That was the case a month ago, and that’s the case again today.

Think we had it right all along and the Mets will win the World Series? Like the Jays, Royals or Cubs better? Tell us in the comments below!

2015 MLB Playoffs: Wild Card Round Preview

MLB playoffs wild card round preview

The 2015 MLB Playoffs get underway on Tuesday night and wrap up on Wednesday. It’s the beginning of a wild October ride; one the Astros, Yankees, Cubs and Pirates will all hope to stick around and join. Only two teams can move on to the next round, though, so let’s take a look at both matchups and see which teams are likely to stay alive in the chase for the 2015 World Series.

Houston Astros @ New York Yankees

The upstart Astros weren’t supposed to be in this situation. On one hand they were supposed to have their division wrapped up and this should have been an all-or-nothing position the hated Texas Rangers would be in. On the other hand, Houston maybe wasn’t supposed to be in the MLB playoff picture at all. But they are here, and now Dallas Keuchel will lead the Astros into Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, trying to spin the ball the way he does at home (where he hasn’t lost yet). Doing that on the road against the heavy bats of the Yanks is beyond easier said than done, of course, which is why there is speculation the Astros will be one and done tonight.

Then again, what the Astros have still might be better than New York, even though they’re on the road. Masahiro Tanaka is supposed to be an elite arm that guides New York’s suspect offense through the fire, but he’s fading fast down the stretch and now may be under too much pressure with too much on the lines. If Tanaka can’t keep things together, this could very well be a battle of the bats in what otherwise would come off as a pitcher’s duel. Of course, with anything close to a pitcher’s duel going down in home run central (Yankee Stadium), this game grows increasingly more difficult to call.

The kicker here is Keuchel. He’s not great on three day’s rest and he’s even worse on the road. Make that road game at Yankee Stadium and it’s tough to love him and the Astros to move on.

Pick: Yankees 4, Astros 3

Chicago Cubs @ Pittsburgh Pirates

Thought the first MLB wild card playoff game was tough to call? Try Jake Arrieta versus Gerrit Cole on for size. Both of these MLB playoff games could easily be pitcher’s duels, but this one yields fewer chances and monster smashes and the quality of pitching should be at a higher level from top to bottom, as well. Oddly enough, this game is easier to call.

The reality is this: there should be even less scoring in Wednesday’s game. Elite pitching can rule the playoffs and while it sometimes does not (here’s to looking at you, Kershaw), it feels like it just might in this showdown. This is really all about Arrieta, who has won three of four games against these Pirates and carries the stronger odds to come through in the clutch. Cole has wins under his belt and an ERA below 3.0 on the year and he’s also had success against a good Cubs offense that tends to K a ton. He’s also at home.

However, there isn’t much to hate about Arrieta here, and with such an evenly matched showdown, he has to get the slightest of nods.

Pick: Cubs 2, Pirates 1

Kris Bryant Leads 2015 MLB Jersey Sales

Kris Bryant MLB jersey sales

Kris Bryant got a lot accomplished during his rookie 2015 MLB season. He got to participate in the 2015 MLB Home Run Derby, he helped get the Chicago Cubs to a wild card playoff showdown with the hated Pittsburgh Pirates and even ended up pacing all of baseball in jersey sales.

The second little tidbit is probably the most important, but leading MLB jersey sales is pretty impressive. It’s not a major shock, either, considering the Cubs are a widely loved baseball team and turned into a very solid team this season. Bryant is also one of the game’s top young players, as he made quite an impression in his first season with 26 home runs and a solid .275 batting average. Not bad for the kid’s first season.

While the logic is there for Kris Bryant to take the top spit in MLB jersey sales in 2015, it was still a mild surprise to see a rookie out last the likes of Clayton Kershaw (4th), Mike Trout (5th) and even Bryce Harper (6th). Bryant even edged out teammate Anthony Rizzo (8th) who also appeared in the Home Run Derby and even blaster more homers (31) on the season.

Kudos to Bryant for a strong season, and even more props considering the Cubs are still playing. That being said, Bryant was far from the only surprise on the top-20 list revealed by MLB.com, as a few names could have you thinking a ton of people just happened to order the same set of custom baseball uniforms.

Names like Yadier Molina and David Wright are pretty big surprises to make the top 20 best selling MLB jersey list, especially since that leaves out popular mashers like Chris Davis and Jose Bautista, along with elite arms such as David Price, Chris Sale and Max Scherzer.

Surprised Kris Bryant’s jersey took the top spot during the regular season? Blown away over who didn’t make the cut? Tell us about it in the comments below!

5 Worst Performing MLB Uniforms of 2015

5 worst MLB uniforms of 2015

We recently detailed the landscape of the most successful MLB uniforms in 2015 by breaking down a top-5 list that showcases the top MLB uniforms that happened to be worn the most when teams won games in 2015. This time we spin it around and ponder what a “bad uniform” could look like as we break down the five worst performing baseball uniforms in Major League Baseball this year.

Not so surprisingly, the five uniforms that finished the best in 2015 belonged to teams either locked in for the MLB playoffs or at least very much in the mix. The bottom five? Our guess would be it wouldn’t include a single playoff contender and that a few of the uniforms would be at least somewhat questionable. We would have been wrong.

Thanks to SportsLogos.net, we know the exact top five MLB uniforms that graded out the worst in 2015: the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Athletics, Rockies and Braves.

Hey, we were close! L.A. and Toronto are two of the best teams in all of baseball and are definitely going to the playoffs, yet they ranked second to last and last with their cream grey road jerseys. Those custom baseball uniforms didn’t work out too well for them despite looking pretty sweet, but they were far from the worst performing uni’s. Coming in dead last was the Oakland Athletics with their awesome yellow alternate jerseys, while the Braves’ navy blue alternate jersey and the Rockies’ alternate blake uniforms were third to last.

Toronto wore their cream alternate jerseys 31 times and ended up losing 21 times (32% win percentage), but that was actually quite strong compared to everyone else in this list, as no other jersey had better than a 29% win percentage (Dodgers). The two best teams with the two best uniforms in terms of winning? Right, not too shocking.

Oakland was by far the worst, however, as they won just three of 17 games when wearing their bold yellow alternate jerseys. The saddest part? One could make the case that the A’s yellow jerseys are the best looking uniforms in this list. Heck, maybe even all of baseball.

It’s an unfortunate stat for all five teams, really, as these are actually some of the better looking MLB uniforms you’ll find in the league. That being said, we can probably bet the team analytics guy will be suggesting to ditch some of these jerseys from the yearly rotation.

Which losing uniform would you ditch from the rotation? Tell us in the comments below!

Top 5 Performing MLB Uniforms of 2015

Top 5 MLB uniforms 2015

The 2015 MLB regular season is winding down, with some teams just trying to stay healthy for the MLB playoffs and a few others still trying to get in. For just about every team, they may want to factor in how they did with certain MLB uniforms this year the next time they take a look at analytics.

The winning teams might want to double check what went right, the losing teams will want to know what went wrong and the middling teams may want to look for that extra little edge to get them over the hump. In a sport where the room for error appears to be razor thin, sometimes something as trivial as what you wear really could make the difference.

Okay, maybe not REALLY, but there is something to be said about a slick or ugly uniform and how it can make the players feel. Perhaps if what you’re wearing makes you feel extra confident or on the flip side, even a little glum, it could impact your play. It certainly puts a whole new spin on custom baseball uniforms and how to approach the game, at the very least.

Even if it doesn’t, its fun to point out and the fellas over at SportsLogos.net did all the hard work for us, as they rounded up the five best performing MLB uniforms of 2015.

Which MLB uniforms were the most “successful” this year? The teams they represent shouldn’t take you by surprise. The St. Louis Cardinals, who currently hold the league’s best record (99 wins) naturally make the list, along with fellow likely playoff participants, the Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. The Dodgers, Cardinals and Mets are all locks to make the playoffs, while the Astros still have to do some work to get in. The other team that rounds out the top five is Bryce Harper’s Washington Nationals, who could still get in, too, but have slid as of late.

The point? The five most “winning” MLB jerseys in 2015 happen to go along with winning squads, as all five teams are above .500 and are at least mathematically still in the mix for the playoffs. More specifically, the Astros lead the way with their white home uniforms (40-19 record), followed by the Dodgers’ white home jersey (40-22), the Nats’ red alternate uniform (22-11), the Mets’ white home jersey (34-18) and the Cards’ white home jersey (39-21).

What’s the biggest takeaway from the top five performing MLB uniforms? Four of five are home jerseys. Being at home will always make players and teams as a whole more comfortable, so it’s only natural for that to be the case. Perhaps the clean white look also helps, while the Nats could feel more confident in their bold red alternate jerseys – the only MLB uniforms to make the list that weren’t specifically home jerseys.

Ultimately these numbers largely come down to five good teams that happened to wear these jerseys a decent amount, but it’s still interesting to see who makes the top-five and which jerseys they sported that ended up helping them to the best winning percentage. Got another interesting MLB uniform fun fact we should know? Tell us in the comments below!

5 of the Best Dressed MLB Teams in Baseball

5 best dressed MLB teams

There’s nothing like a sharp-dressed baseball team when it comes to MLB. It’s like George Costanza once said about the New York Yankees uniforms – “cotton breathes” – in reference to switching from polyester uniforms to cotton uniforms. The Yanks did look good on their first try of the uniforms, but later the fabric shrunk and that trial with custom baseball uniforms ended badly.

That was just the feel of the uniforms, though. New York still has one of the more timeless (yet moder) looks in all of baseball, that even non-Yankees fans can come to appreciate. They’re not the only one, either. Let’s take a look at five MLB teams that arguably have the cleanest, sharpest and possibly even coolest uniforms in baseball today:

5 Best MLB Uniforms

New York Yankees

I’m sorry, but we’re not sorry. The Yanks kick off our favorite MLB uniforms because they’re as timeless as it gets. They’re the only team that really makes the pinstripes work (sorry, White Sox) and their solid grey alternates aren’t too shabby, either. The Yanks know how to do vintage and modern, all in one, and as much as some may hate them for their winning and loaded rosters, it’s hard to hate how they look on a daily basis.

Los Angeles Angels

What’s cooler that a halo around an A? Not much, as the Angels live up to their moniker with little effort, and even add to it when the Angels are decked out in their red uniforms. They have just the right amount of edge to go with a cool logo and one of the best players in baseball – Mike Trout.

Washington Nationals

Maybe it’s because Bryce Harper is such a beast, but few MLB uniforms feel as edgy and put together as Nationals jerseys. The logo is big and bold and doesn’t dominate the uniform, while the lining down the middle of the jersey gives off a new age look. The Nats are one of the best examples of paying homage to the past while also keeping an eye to the future (and present).

Kansas City Royals

Kansas City is not just one of the best teams in baseball this year – they’re also among the best dressed. Much like the Dodgers, the Royals know how to put cursive to good use, as the “Royals” text across their jersey is just the right shade of blue and all kinds of awesome. The white and blue go together perfectly, while giving the Royals the perfect balance between an old school and modern feel.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Does anyone keep it more old school that the Dodgers? The days of Brooklyn can be felt with their sharp, blue cursive across the chest, while the blue and white is a never-dying combo that everyone can appreciate. Some MLB uniforms get tired and boring, but the days of Jackie Robinson still live on with today’s Dodgers uniforms. That’s a good thing.

5 of the Worst MLB Uniforms Today

worst MLB uniforms

Part of watching Major League Baseball is taking in all of the sights and sounds. The games are woefully unpredictable and even when they are, you can often sit through 10 innings of one run baseball. Needless to say, what you see, hear and even eat can make or break your day.

Focusing on the “see” aspect, it’s interesting to think about which teams have the best custom baseball uniforms, and which may want to go back to the drawing board. You may agree or disagree with some of our picks (hey, that’s what the comments section is for!), but we found five MLB uniforms we thought either tried too hard or aren’t trying hard enough:

5 Worst MLB Uniforms

Cleveland Indians

Cleveland gonna Cleveland. It’s not nice, but it’s the truth. The Indians follow suit with all things Cleveland sports, as their uniforms are just bland and uninspiring. The Indians have a cool and timeless logo, but the rest of their uniforms lack any punch. They should follow the Cavaliers and Browns and at least shake things up a bit.

Colorado Rockies

We’ll give in to one thing – the Black alternative Rockies jerseys aren’t bad. They’re even kind of cool. But the basic white jerseys and all of the purple, it’s just a bit much. Basically the purple New York Yankees, but not nearly as good, Colorado hasn’t changed much since coming into the league over 20 years ago. That’s not a good thing.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants are no strangers to winning and it’s hard to completely fault them for going with a traditional look. Unfortunately, it isn’t the least bit splashy and touches a little too hard on boring. The Giants have a decent logo and the orange and black always meshes well, but their white jerseys are about as bland as it gets.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brew Crew went from a vintage, old school look to a really modern day look that ended up being a total miss. As weird as the old ball in the glove look used to be, the yellow and blue throwback jerseys at least made you feel like you were at an MLB game. The current Brewers uniforms isn’t the worst in the league and you can’t fault a team for trying to upgrade, but overall it’s a miss. More specifically, sometimes throwbacks aren’t meant to be alternative uniforms. Sometimes they should just be the standard. For Milwaukee, that’s very much the case.

Miami Marlins

Oh, Marlins. Miami is a great team to cap our worst MLB uniforms list, as they’re clearly trying way too hard. The Florida Marlins jerseys probably would have made this list, too, but for different reasons. Miami has far too many colors that don’t make sense, and the weirdness involved with their “M” really takes the cake. It’s clear they went out of their way to make a fresh, vibrant look for the team’s move, and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Got a strong take one way or the other on the best and worst MLB uniforms? Let us hear it in the comments below!

2015 MLB Free Agency: 5 Potential Landing Spots For Yoenis Cespedes

dark green and yelloy baseball uniform

The New York Mets swung a trade to land star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes earlier this summer and it’s paid off in a big way. A once lethargic Mets offense now has the power and consistency to match it’s elite pitching rotation, and suddenly New York is a playoff lock with World Series aspirations.

It’s a pretty nice spot to be in if you’re the Mets. They might few differently in a few months. Per reports, New York is already thinking about life without one of their best offensive players, as they have other guys they have to worry about keeping and bringing Yo back would cost a bit more than they’d like to give up.

With Yoenis Cespedes hitting free agency this spring, it’s highly possible he’ll be on his fourth team in as many years. With that being a possibility, let’s take a second to look at five teams that could be willing to pay up to land him for the 2016 MLB season:

Kansas City Royals

One of the best teams in all of baseball can still get better, as the Royals could really use Yo’s power and defense. The Royals were already loosely tied to Cespedes this summer in trade rumors, so it wouldn’t be a shock if they pulled the trigger on a long-term deal with him after the season.

Baltimore Orioles

Camden Yards can be a beautiful place, especially with the O’s have mean power hitters to abuse opposing defenses. Cespedes could potentially be a part of that dream, as Chris Davis is a free agent and the Orioles could have to replace him. Even if Crush stays in Baltimore, the Orioles could use another bat for their sick offense to help push them over the top.

New York Yankees

Since when do the Yankees just settle with what they have? New York is going to be very busy this off-season, as they know they need a big arm or two and will also want another bat or three. Cespedes certainly qualifies as a big, effective bat and he could post career numbers spending the majority of his time at Yankee Stadium.

Detroit Tigers

Say what? Yes, Cespedes got traded to the Tigers last year and this year they unloaded him to the Mets to make sure they didn’t lose him for nothing in free agency. But Detroit will need to be looking for offensive fire power again next year and there has been chatter that landing Yo on a long-term deal is something they’re very interested in. Detroit was looking like a strong contender before they traded away their top talent, including Cespedes. It’s possible they realize their mistake and get him back in town.

New York Mets

That’s right, even with all the rumors of Cespedes moving on and the Mets not wanting to pay up, there is still a small possibility things could work out and he winds up right back in New York. The Mets can’t ignore how good they’ve been since his power was brought into town, and if they get far in the playoffs they may want to strongly consider bringing their best offensive player back to stick around for good.

Got another spot Yo could wind up in 2016? Tell us in the comments below!
