Post-Trade Deadline MLB Predictions: Who Wins it All?

Post-Trade Deadline MLB Predictions

The 2015 MLB trade deadline is in the books and has been for almost a full week now. By now we can start to fully digest the plethora of moves that had big name stars relocating and either crushing the soul of one team as they give up on the 2015 season, or lift the spirits and hopes of another.

Every sport has buyers and sellers when it comes to the trade market, and several teams paid the iron price to beef up their squad to the point where they’re either strong enough to make a serious playoff push, or so elite that it’s hard not envisioning them competing for a World Series title. Only one team can win in the end, but after all the chaos, we at least have to have a leader. Let’s break down the top five contenders coming out of the trade deadline smoke and see who – once and for all – is going to win this thing this year:

Los Angeles Dodgers

Any team going full speed ahead with Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke leading the way was probably going to be a problem. Then the Dodgers traded for a surging Mat Latos and the solid Alex Wood. A star-studded pitching staff got even deeper and with a strong offense backing them, the Dodgers look ready to hold off the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants in the NL West. They may have to, after all, if they want to even get into the playoffs. As tough as just getting in could be due to their competition inside their own division, the Dodgers now have the balanced attack needed to go the distance.

Kansas City Royals

Kansas City has one of the better offenses in baseball and even with outfielder Alex Gordon on the mend (groin), they weren’t a unit anyone wanted to face. The big problem? Pitching. The Royals opted to address their big need by bringing in Reds ace Johnny Cueto, and then topped off their offense by trading for do-it-all man, Ben Zobrist. Cueto may or may not be the missing link between the Royals and a deep playoff run, but he was certainly needed on a Royals team that lacked a truly elite arm. Now they have that arm, and with a 9.5 game league in the AL Central, are fully equipped to make some noise in the MLB playoffs.

Houston Astros

The Astros were one of the more balanced teams in all of baseball, but with studly pitching, their clear weakness remained on the offensive side. It was never really a weakness, though, as their glaring hole was just how much they can strikeout at times. To be safe, the Astros brought in some extra power in Carlos Gomez and even beefed up their elite pitching rotation by landing Scott Kazmir. Already a team to fear, Houston is as balanced as ever and has a great chance at holding down the fort atop the AL West.

New York Mets

New York is pretty stacked when it comes to arms, as they already had Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard leading a solid pitching rotation. Offense was their real problem. Lucas Duda has come alive lately and getting catcher Travis D’Arnaud back to full strength helps a ton, but neither of those happenings is as big as landing outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Yo has already made a huge impact in just a few games and he could really liven up the Mets’ bats, long-term. If this recent surge of offense holds strong, New York could potentially hold off the Washington Nationals and win the NL East. If that happens, they could be a serious title contender.

Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto already boasted the strongest offense in the league (most runs), but they lacked elite pitching. What did they do to get better? They upgraded at shortstop with Troy Tulowitzki AND went out and got an ace in David Price. The Blue Jays did a terrific job improving a major strength and then went out and picked up a stud pitcher to bolster a pitching rotation that – with an elite arm leading the way – now doesn’t look so bad. Are the Jays a legit World Series contender, though? Not just yet, but they’re close. The key will be a crucial series this week with the AL East-leading New York Yankees. How they fare at Yankee Stadium could go a long way in telling us if this team is ready for a real playoff push.

If we’re picking straight from this list, the Dodgers still carry the heaviest stick. Kershaw could be ready to finally deal some gems when it matters most and the Dodgers have a good enough offense to match just about anyone. Teams like the Giants and Cardinals didn’t do much at the trade deadline and still could be obvious trouble, but the Dodgers may take the cake and these five teams all got better. We expect the Dodgers to finally take that next step and win it all this year, but all of this trade action made one thing perfectly clear: whoever does win it all in 2015 won’t be doing so easily.

Arian Foster Injury: 5 Running Backs the Texans Could Sign

Arian Foster Injury: 5 Running Backs the Texans Could Sign

The Houston Texans were dealt a staggering blow on Tuesday afternoon, when news broke that star running back Arian Foster suffered a “severe” groin injury. What initially seemed to be normal training camp news quickly turned into a legit problem for the franchise, as the team learned that Foster’s groin injury was so serious that it would require surgery.

No one knows just yet how long Foster will be out, but all early signs point to the 29-year old rusher beginning 2015 on the designated for return/injured reserve list. That means the Texans are hopefuly they’ll get their best offensive weapon back at some point this season, but not until after week 10 at the earliest. With just Alfred Blue and a mediocre stable of running backs, Houston is likely going to be looking elsewhere for some help in their offensive backfield.

Luckily there are a few solid names out on the open market the Texans could consider. Let’s break down the top five running backs that could help the Texans:

Chris Johnson

Johnson has fizzled out with the Titans and Jets in each of the past two years, but even at 30 years old there are some NFL teams that have to be willing to kick the tires. It usually takes a big injury to force the hand, but Arian Foster going down just might do the trick. Johnson isn’t the best inside runner and his effort is often brought into question, but he’s a solid receiving back and still has home run hitting speed. He may be near the end, but if the burst is there the Texans may give him a look.

Ray Rice

Rice obviously is still bogged down by his off field antics stemming from a year ago and it’s entirely possible no NFL team wants to brave the PR storm signing him would bring on. It’s also possible that at 28 years old and having been away from the league for a year, that he no longer has anything to offer. The last we saw of Rice, he was trying to work his way back from a very disappointing 2013 season that saw him play at less than 100% and rush for an ugly 3.1 yards per carry average. Unless Rice is a total class act AND can prove he’s a lot better than his most recent season’s game tape suggests, he may not be the answer for the Texans – or anyone.

That all being said, the word on Rice isn’t all bad and he’s hungry to get back into the league and prove he still has what it takes. On the surface, it’d be a somewhat nice story to see Rice get another chance somewhere, while his skill-set certainly matches up well with Foster’s. If Rice is ever going to get a real shot with anyone and make a successful comeback, a trip to Houston certainly would make some sense.

Pierre Thomas

Thomas isn’t the biggest name out there, but neither was Arian Foster when he signed on with the Texans as an undrafted free agent several years ago. Okay, so it’s totally different, but Pierre Thomas does share a very similar football uniform and skill-set. It’s doubtful whoever the Texans bring in will be regarded as a total savior for the running back position, so whoever it is is mostly going to be a guy that can simply do everything a feature back can do and then be used mostly in that role. Thomas is especially gifted when it comes to catching passes out of the backfield and while he wouldn’t be used on all three downs as a regular starter, he could surely lighten the load of Alfred Blue and the other Houston running backs.

Thomas is not an answer to replace Foster, but he’d be a solid part of a collective answer. It’s a step to the side instead of forward or backward, but with the team bringing him in for a visit, it’s clear the team considers him a potentially solid addition.

Ahmad Bradshaw

Bradshaw is another injury risk, so grabbing him to help replace Foster is almost laughable. That being said, Bradshaw doesn’t have a ton of mileage on his legs and was very efficient and productive as recently as last year. He’s always had injury woes, but is extremely versatile and can produce from anywhere on the field. Like Pierre Thomas, he’s not really a feature back but he’d be a great body to toss in to help Blue and co.

Knowshon Moreno

Speaking of injury risks, Moreno tore his knee up yet again last year and may seriously be on his last leg. If healthy, though, he could still possibly be a lead back and at worst can help out in a committee. Moreno is a very versatile back who can do it all or slide in and be part of a rotation. He was fantastic in 2013 with the Broncos and looked good again last year in Miami before succumbing to another knee injury. He’s high risk, but he’s a do-it-all guy that won’t cost much.

Got another running back in mind to help replaced Arian Foster? Let us hear about him in the comments below!

Ideal 2015-16 NBA Starting Lineups: Boston Celtics

NBA Summer League Players

The Boston Celtics found a way to worm into the NBA playoffs a year ago in head coach Brad Stevens’ second season at the helm. Naturally, Celtics fans will be expecting (or at least hoping) for the 2015-16 season to yield an even better team. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but if Boston sends out the right unit and uses their roster correctly, they could easily lock down the 8th spot again and continue to improve.

How do they do that, though? Let’s analyze their roster and put together the ideal starting five and main rotation to map out a contender:

Starting 5: Marcus Smart (PG), Evan Turner (SG), Jae Crowder (SF), David Lee (PF), Amir Johnson (C)

The talk of Smart being benched needs to stop. He’s a plus defender who can hit spot-up three’s and has the size and athleticism to be an elite player. He still needs work on creating and scoring on his own, but these are attributes he flashed at a high level in college and should easily progress with moving forward. A shift to shooting guard wouldn’t be the worst move ever, but I like him just fine at the one and think he can excel there if given time.

With Smart locked in at the point, I like Turner at the two. He can play all three wing spots and might be best served as a three, but he’s actually a pretty good scorer and creator, so this is still a solid fit for him. He’s a versatile player who has the ability to defend, so if he plays to his talent you could do worse at the two spot. I’ll hear arguments to keep Avery Bradley here over him, as Turner is not a very efficient offensive player either, but he gives you more size and play-making ability than Bradley does.

Crowder is a no-brainer at the three spot, as he developed into a pretty reliable outside shooter and is also a very strong defender. He also got paid a ton of money this summer, so he’s going to start.

David Lee was brought in via trade and while the Celtics owe the 32-year old nothing, he still has fresh legs after sitting much of last season. He’s a defensive problem, but playing with Amir Johnson could help hide that, while no one else on this team can bring the combination of scoring and rebounding that he can. He’s a high energy guy that can get 15 points and 10 rebounds a night, if not more.

Johnson is a must at center to protect the rim, rebound and chip in on offense. He’s actually highly skilled offensively within five feet and if it weren’t for health woes, you’d hear him hyped up way more. I think he’s a bit of a free agent gem as he can tie together a tight defense and still offer some offensive upside down low.

This is not an elite starting unit by any means, but it very much is a strong one. Save for Lee, this is a starting five that can collectively create, score and defense at a moderate level. With a strong bench behind them and stellar coaching, this starting unit could have the Celtics looking even better come next season.

Main Bench: Isaiah Thomas (PG), Avery Bradley (SG), Jared Sullinger (PF), Tyler Zeller (C) and Kelly Olynyk (C)

The starting five is just solid, but this bench is absolutely beautiful. Isaiah Thomas is rumored to possibly end up starting, but that would ruin Smart’s development and distract IT2 from what he does best – just score the ball. As a 6th man he knows his job is to come in and produce points one way or another and he can do exactly that with no confusion about his role. Then there is Bradley and Sully, who could be terrific bench guys at shooting guard and power forward. Bradley can man the point in a pinch, can score in bunches and is a defensive ace. The problem? He’s not a true point guard, he’s under-sized for the two and he’s woefully erratic as a shooter. Bradley would best be served as a situational piece that can come in and play lockdown defense while also providing a scoring boost off the bench. The same goes for Sully, who probably is losing his starting gig due to poor conditioning. He can stretch the floor off the bench and hit the rebounds, but as a strong bench guy he’s not being asked to come in and dominate every night.

Zeller and Olynyk make up a very solid base at backup center, as both can play the floor if they absolutely have to and both have specific attributes at the five. I don’t think Olynyk is a starting center due to his weak defense, but he can shoot and score at a fairly high level. Zeller is largely there for his defense, so depending on the night and matchup, Stevens can use these guys as needed.

This is a string of very strong bench players that all could arguably start on any average team (especially this one). But as bench players, they form a very solid second unit for a young and rising team. The best part? We’re not even getting to the raw talent of R.J. Hunter (potential lights out three-point specialist), James Young (high upside two-way wing player), Terry Rozier (explosive lead guard and scorer) and Perry Jones (high upside forward ‘tweener).

It’s likely none of these guys will crack the regular rotation, but all have specific skill-sets that could make them names to watch.

Overall, Boston is a lot stronger than they look at first glance, but probably only if they stay the course with the right lineup. Stevens switched things up a lot last year, and while that at times worked in Boston’s favor, I think sticking with a set rotation (the one above) will benefit the team the most.

Think this rotation is all wrong? Let us hear who you’d play in Boston in the comments below!

Final MLB Trades That Could Go Down Before the Deadline

Final MLB Trades That Could Go Down Before the Deadline

There has been tons of speculation for the past few months as to who would go where when it comes to MLB trade rumors. The whispers behind closed doors are about to come to an end, when MLB teams can finally no longer swing trades after Friday’s 4:00 pm ET deadline.

With names like Johnny Cueto, Cole Hamels and Scott Kazmir already traded over the past two weeks, it’s hard to believe the trade market can get much crazier. There still remain some heavy hitters and big arms that could be dealt, however, and there is a whole day of action potentially awaiting us.

Let’s scour over the top names that are still likely to be traded and analyze what the latest buzz suggests:

All of the San Diego Padres

There isn’t one exclusive player, as the Padres aren’t going anywhere this year and are said to be very interested in making some deals. It certainly is worth noting that there’s been a lot of talk and entering the final day nothing has happened, but we can’t look past them. The biggest names by far are outfielder Justin Upton and pitchers Andrew Cashner, James Shields and Tyson Ross. Upton is leading the way in talks and has gotten serious interested from the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox, among others. He should be dealt on the final day of MLB trades for 2015.

As for the pitching, with the Padres so open to getting a deal done, at least one of them is probably on their way out. The Padres like Ross and he’s safely under roster control for a few years yet, so trading him makes less sense than trading one or both of their other top pitchers. That being said, the Chicago Cubs have shown strong interest and could end up prying him out of San Diego’s grasp. Cashner bombed in his most recent trip to the mound so I think his value dips a bit, but I’d be surprised if Shields isn’t moved to a contending team before Friday’s MLB trade deadline.

Yoenis Cespedes and Rentals

Detroit doesn’t totally want to give up on making a late run this season, but they also don’t want to lose a ton of talent for nothing. They already shipped off David Price and Yoenis Cespedes is the next big name that comes off the books after this season. Cespedes and any other Tigers player that is currently a rental is going to be a big time candidate to get dealt. I think that has Cespedes going elsewhere, while the Orioles and White Sox (just like with Upton), seem very interested in making a deal. Don’t rule out the New York Mets, either, as they whiffed on Carlos Gomez and should still be seeking a hot bat.

Parra Next Brewer to Go?

With Carlos Gomez finally shipped off in a trade, it’s clear the Milwaukee Brewers are open for business. Ourfielder Gerardo Parra is rumored to be the next Brew Crew member on the trading block and the Baltimore Orioles are the leading contenders. Baltimore is still pushing for a wild card spot and could use a consistent bat to take a step up.

Mets After Bruce

There hasn’t been a whole lot of word about the Cincinnati Reds now that Johnny Cueto is gone, but word is the team could consider parting ways with masher Jay Bruce. The New York Mets still badly need some offense and are reportedly smitten with the outfielder.

Yovani Garnering Interest

Yovani Gallardo just got slapped around by the New York Yankees but is said to be getting a good amount of interest from roughly five MLB teams. Gallardo is a solid arm in the right spot in a rotation and had largely been throwing good stuff until Thursday evening’s debacle. Gallardo could be on the move as the Rangers make room for star Cole Hamels to take over.

Chapman on the Move?

Easily one of the top closers in the game right now, Aroldis Chapman could be on his way out of Cincy. Chapman has the fastest toss in all of baseball and several teams are looking to pry him away from the Reds. The Arizona Diamondbacks are the latest team to poke around at Chapman’s status, but he’s by no mean’s a lock to leave Ohio.

2015 NFL Training Camp News and Notes For July 30th

2015 NFL Training Camp News and Notes

NFL training camps have started for the 2015 NFL season and we’re already starting to hear about changing roles, injuries and hyperbole about young, promising talents. With the first few days in the books for a lot of teams, a good amount of news has already channeled in.

Let’s break down the latest buzz:

Roddy White Regressing

White already showed signs of regression last season, but now reportedly has had his troublesome knee drained multiple times since the end of last season. White says he’s “not worried” about the knee, but he soon-to-be 34-year old may be finally running out of gas.

Joique Bell Not 100%

The Detroit Lions drafted running back Ameer Abdullah to help their offensive backfield but they were still counting on starter Joique Bell being healthy for 2015. That still may end up being the case, but Bell is definitely not healthy to begin camp. The team placed Bell on the active/PUP list with knee and Achilles issues and can’t be excited about their top rusher being at less than 100%.

Rams Running Game

St. Louis got some good news with rookie running back Todd Gurley not being placed on the active/PUP list to start training camp. Not only does that give Gurley a shot at playing in week one, but the Rams could even get a good look at him in camp and preseason play. Despite Gurley’s rehab from a torn ACL going according to plan, the team is still far from decided on a starter. Tre Mason currently holds that role, but it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next month.

Trent Richardson Failing

The Oakland Raiders brought in veteran running back Trent Richardson as depth and possibly competition behind Latavius Murray. Their latest reclamation project hasn’t gone according to plan. Per reports, Richardson has not impressed despite dropping weight to improve his quickness.

Ryan Kerrigan Extended

The Washington Redskins didn’t have a very good defense from top to bottom in 2014. They did well to ensure one of their star defensive players would be around to help turn that around, though, as the team agreed to terms with pass rusher Ryan Kerrigan on a massive contract extension. Kerrigan was one of the few bright spots for the Washington defense in 2014, as he recorded 13.5 sacks. Kerrigan signed on for a five-year, $57.5 million pact that should give the Redskins a solid presence on at least one side of the field.

Cowboys Have a #1 RB

The Dallas Cowboys seemed to have a plan when they let star running back DeMarco Murray leave in free agency. It sounds like that plan is Joseph Randle. Dallas owner Jerry Jones “expressed confidence” in Randle’s ability to take over the lead role and suggested the team would not pursue outside sources like Ray Rice or Chris Johnson – yet.

Clay on the Inside

The Green Bay Packers started training camp with explosive edge rusher Clay Matthews once again on the inside of their defense. Matthews’ talents are arguably best used on the outside, but once switched to the inside last year, Green Bay’s defense seemed to benefit greatly from it. It will be interesting to track Matthews’ exact role in the defense, as well as the impact of it.

Breshad Perriman Starting?

The explosive rookie was seen running with the starters right away in camp, suggesting he’s already very much in the lead to start alongside veteran Steve Smith. That was probably the plan all along, but due his raw ability, few could have anticipated the jump this early.

Got more hot training camp buzz? Tell us about it in the comments below!

2015 MLB Trade Deadline: Analyzing the Top Names That Could Be Moved

2015 MLB Trade Deadline

The 2015 MLB trade deadline is almost here. Just two days remain before playoff hopefuls will find out if they have the ammunition needed, whether by arm or bat, to make that final push. Several trades involving star players have already gone down and we’re almost sure to see a few more before the deadline hits at the end of the month. The big question, naturally, is which ones get shipped out of town?

Rumors have swirled, but once the smoke clears there are still a ton of top shelf players that haven’t been moved. Let’s break them down and assess their top likely destinations if they end up getting traded:

Cole Hamels, SP, Philadelphia Phillies

Hamels remains the most highly sought after arm and his value couldn’t be higher thanks to a recent no-hitter. His top suitors remain the same, as the Yankees and Rangers are both interested. The trick with Hamels, of course, is that he can block any trade he doesn’t like. There has been a gigantic list of interested teams, but Hamels is really only considering a handful. Ultimately, he’s either sticking on the Philly roster or probably going to the Yanks.

David Price, SP, Detroit Tigers

Price is an interesting trade target, since the Tigers seemingly don’t even know if they want to keep trying to win this year or not. They’re expected to make a decision on that this week, and if they decide to tank the rest of the way, trading away their top ace could be a big part of that. Price isn’t wanting for suitors, as the Yankees, Dodgers and Blue Jays all are reportedly interested. L.A. could back off after acquiring Mat Latos from Miam, however.

Jeff Samardzija, SP, Chicago White Sox

Samardzija is on his second Chicago-based MLB team and it very well could be his last. Despite enjoying a nice run of late, Samardzija is very much on the trading block for a struggling White Sox team despite the team making a nice run recently. Of course, there are contradicting whispers that suggest the White Sox could be growing confident in what they have after their recent success. Samardzija is a free agent after this season, however, so Chicago would be risking an unlikely playoff run for getting nothing in return for one of their top aces.

James Shields, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross, SP, San Diego Padres

The Padres aren’t very good and it seems they know it. Pretty much anyone and everyone is up for grabs, and that includes all of their best pitchers. Shields and Cashner are quality arms that have been negatively impacted by shaky run support and Ross is a nice young ace that could be a cornerstone for the right club. The Padres should be less willing to give up Ross due to his contract, but it’d be a minor shock if one of these guys isn’t shipped off in a trade this week.

Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Colorado Rockies

CarGo has been ablaze lately and despite mildly slowing down on Tuesday night, he’s going to be high atop team’s lists if they’re looking for some nice offense. Recent reports suggest the Rockies may hold off on dealing Gonzalez before the deadline, but his recent tear suggests now is the time. With Colorado already getting rid of Troy Tulowitzki this week, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more Rockies on their way out of town.

Justin Upton, OF, San Diego Padres

Upton is probably the top hitter on the trading block that is almost certain to be dealt. The New York Mets were said to be extremely close to landing the 27-year old outfielder, but San Diego’s asking price was said to be too much. The lack of a deal has opened the door to other teams to get involved and the Baltimore Orioles are one of them. Odds are Upton gets dealt within the next two days and either the Mets or O’s are the likely landing spot.

Carlos Gomez, OF, Milwaukee Brewers

Gomez isn’t the only other hitter than can be had, but he’s probably the last high profile batter on the trading block. Milwaukee has been pretty bad and despite a nice run a few weeks ago, they’ve slowed back down and are probably ready to sell. Gomez isn’t the most efficient hitter but he brings major power to the table and is still in his prime at 29 years old. He could put the right offense over the top and has been tied to the Rangers and Indians.

Got an even bigger name you think gets dealt before the 2015 MLB trade deadline hits? Tell us in the comments below!

MLB Trade Rumors: Cargo, Papelbon and Hamels on the Move?

2015 MLB Trade Deadline

We’re following all of the top MLB trade rumors closely, as it’s just a matter of days before the 2015 MLB trade deadline arrives. The Toronto Blue Jays made a solid move to bolster an already elite offense by trading for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and more moves could be coming on Tuesday afternoon.

Let’s scour the MLB trade rumor mill and see what other star players could be headed elsewhere within the next few days:

CarGo on the Go?

There might not be a better time to shop Carlos Gonzalez, who is fresh off of back-to-back outings with two home runs. The 29-year old outfielder hasn’t always had the best of luck when it comes to health and lacks consistent efficiency, but he’s a top shelf power hitter that numerous contending teams would love to have. Per reports, he’s more than available, and no one is doubting that after Colorado just dealt one of their top star players. The Mets have been very active in their pursuit for more hitting, so they could be the top team to watch as the trade deadline nears.

Giants Pushing For Hamels

The Cole Hamels trade rumors won’t quit until the trade deadline because he’s easily the hottest name on the market. Numerous teams have been tied to Hamels throughout the season, but the defending champion San Francisco Giants have now thrown their hat into the ring. San Francisco is making a “strong push” despite facing major competition in the Cole Hamels sweepstakes. The Dodgers, Yankees and many others will go hard after Hamels until a deal is final, but the Giants will have loads of cap room coming next year, making a deal for Hamels quite realistic. Already a top World Series contender, landing Hamels could be the finishing touch on a loaded pitching staff for SF.

Zobrist Interest Still Hot

Ben Zobrist has been one of the hottest name in the MLB trade rumor mill all year long and the utility man is still being eyed by numerous teams. The Mets need his offense the most, but the Pirates, Angels, Cubs and many others have continued to poke at him in trade talks. New York might be the slight leader due to their need for healthy bats, but it’s a guessing game as to precisely where he goes at this point. It’s also possible the A’s just keep him for the remainder of the season.

Mets Eyeing Papelbon

One of the game’s top closers could be on the move. Per reports, the New York Mets desire more than just an offensive boost, as they also are in talks to land Phillies pitcher Jonathan Papelbon. Papelbon is wasting away on one of the league’s worst clubs, but the 34-year old righty still has racked up 17 saves on the year. Papelbon reportedly won’t OK the deal unless he’s slotted to be New York’s closer, however.

Ozuna Inquiries

The Miami Marlins aren’t said to be shopping Marcell Ozuna, but that hasn’t stopped “numerous” teams from inquiring about his availability. Miami isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so it’s possible they’ll start listening to offers for the 24-year old. Ozuna was recently demoted to the minors, but still carries plenty of upside.

2015 MLB Trade Rumors: Cole Hamels, Justin Upton, David Price and More

MLB Trade Rumors Cole Hamels, Justin Upton, David Price and More

The 2015 MLB trade deadline is just a few days away, which understandably has MLB trade chatter churning out at an all-time high. Huge likes like Scott Kazmir and Johnny Cueto have already changed hands and given some teams a much-needed boost, but plenty of stars could be on the move as teams try to make a last ditch effort to improve their World Series odds.

On top of that, losing teams are simply conducting fire sales, rendering many players that normally wouldn’t otherwise be shopped completely available. We’ll be tracking the latest MLB trade buzz as we get closer to the deadline, but let’s first go over the hottest updates for today:

Tigers in Buy Mode

David Price has been a hot name on the trade market due to speculation that the Detroit Tigers might be ready to mail in the 2015 season. Not so fast, says Jon Morosi, who suggests Detroit still like their balanced talent and for now is giving it a strong go at beefing up their roster and trying to make a run in the second half. Morosi does imply that the Tigers could quickly change their tune if they don’t far well against the Tampa Bay Rays this week, however.

Orioles, Padres Talk Upton

It’s been no secret that San Diego Padres star outfielder Justin Upton is available, while the Padres in general have made it known that just about everyone is available for the right price. Discussions have approached a serious level with the Baltimore Orioles regarding Upton, though. A potential deal could also include Andrew Cashner or Tyson Ross, although the Padres don’t seem overly excited about the idea of letting Ross go. Baltimore looks to stay in the race for the AL Wild Card (as well as the AL East), and landing a big bat and another useful arm could make that happen.

Suitor List For Hamels Grows

Who isn’t in the Cole Hamels sweepstakes at this point? Hamels was surely regarded as a strong arm to beef a rotation before this week, but a no hitter against the Chicago Cubs naturally has even more teams now excited to land the veteran ace. Reports suggest he’s done in Philly and it’s only a matter of time before his exit is complete. Too many teams are involved to know where he’s going just yet, though, while the Arizona Diamondbacks strangely are the latest team to be added to the list of interested clubs.

Victorino Sent to Angels

Trade rumors are flying left and right, but actual trade news is slow to creep out to start the week. Shane Victorino is the first casualty, though, as the Boston Red Sox have shipped him off to the L.A. Angels. Victorino is still a capable bat at times, but this isn’t a groundbreaking deal for either side.

2015 NFL Training Camp: Top Players With Something to Prove

NFL Training Camp News and Notes For July 30th

Training camp can be a dreaded experienced for NFL veterans, but it can also bring hope for an undrafted player to prove he belongs in the league or for young veterans to convince their franchise they are ready to make an impact. More specifically, training camp can often allow a would-be bust show everyone his failed first season doesn’t define his career.

There are quite a few players that will at least aim to turn the corner in their careers, because if they can’t, this training camp could very well be their last. Let’s take a look at several big names that haven’t lived up to the hype just yet and may need big camps to earn a guaranteed role (or even a roster spot) in 2015:

Robert Griffin III, QB, Washington Redskins

Few young quarterbacks are going to be under the microscope as much as RG3, especially when it comes to projected starters. After an absolutely sensational rookie season that had him looking like a superstar, RG3 has been a shell of who we all thought he was. He’s entering year two of Jay Gruden’s system and is supposedly improving, but if his athleticism and confidence don’t both return, his run in the league as a starter could be coming to an end.

Geno Smith, QB, New York Jets

There’s no doubt Smith has shown flashes of being a solid weekly starter in his first two seasons, but horrid decision-making and turnovers have damaged his reputation. The Jets have finally surrounded him with stellar talent on offense, however, so the beleaguered passer is running out of excuses as he prepares for camp.

Johnny Manziel, QB, Cleveland Browns

It sounds crazy that a quarterback’s career could be over after exactly six quarters as a starter, but that’s the brutal reality Johnny Football could be facing in Cleveland. Already looked at as a boom or bust prospect coming into the league a year ago, laziness, cockiness and rehab have crushed any optimism surrounding the tiny passer. If Manziel is going to salvage a career in the pros, he may need to leap frog Josh McCown and win the Browns starting quarterback job in August.

Doug Martin, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Muscle Hamster was a beast as a rookie in 2012, and has since trended downward in horrific fashion. He deserves a mulligan for 2013, when a freak labrum injury robbed him of his health. He’s also played behind a weak offensive line throughout his career, but there’s no doubt the jury is still out on whether or not his awesome rookie run was a fluke. With Charles Sims waiting to take over behind him, Martin may have to enjoy an awesome camp to hold onto his starting job.

Bishop Sankey, RB, Tennessee Titans

Sankey was awful as a rookie in 2014, as he struggled with production and simple fundamentals. Sankey needs to put in a ton of work to hold onto the starting gig in Tennessee and already looks like a bust. If rookie running back David Cobb supplants him, he could be on his way out of the league just a year after getting drafted in the second round.

Andre Ellington, RB, Arizona Cardinals

Ellington is an extremely explosive and versatile offensive weapon, but 2014 may have shown everyone he’s not made to be a featured NFL runner. A small stature contributed to injuries and weak inside running, as Ellington played well under 100% in year two and ended the year with a paltry 3.3 yard per carry average. David Johnson was drafted to push him, and if Ellington can’t fend him off, his days as a leading man could be numbered.

Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee Titans

Hunter was supposed to bust out in 2014 due to big size and great athleticism, but inconsistency, poor quarterback play and a lacerated spleen held him back. He now has some off field issues to deal with and the team brought in several wide receivers to increase competition. If Hunter can’t beat the odds and make a huge impression in training camp, a promising career could be over before it ever really got started.

Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Minnesota Vikings

C-Patt stormed the league as a rookie, as he busted out several big plays in the return game and flashed ability as a receiver. That raw talent didn’t translate in 2014, when he turned out to be a bit of a bust due to an inability to master his routes and beat coverage. Shaky quarterback play was partially to blame, but even with Teddy Bridgewater improving in 2015, Patterson may be too buried with the addition of Mike Wallace to make much of an impact. If he wants to be an impact player in Minnesota, though, he may have to find a way to make it work this season.

Tyler Eifert, TE, Cincinnati Bengals

Eifert’s gotten a raw deal through two NFL seasons. He’s played in a fairly run-heavy offense, has Andy Dalton as his quarterback and dislocated his elbow right away in week one in 2014. Then the Bengals drafted two rookie tight ends behind him and suddenly he might be facing a make-or-break season. The weird thing is Eifert is a terrific talent who could thrive in the right situation. Unless he makes it happen in 2015, though, that situation may not be with the Bengals.

2015 NFL Training Camp: Top Rookies to Monitor

NFL Training Camp: Top Rookies to Monitor

The 2015 NFL season is just about here, as some teams already have their rookies reporting to training camp. It’s just a matter of time before real games are being played in August, and then just one month later we’ll have games that count.

Training camp is an exciting part of the NFL season, as it breeds competition, gets the ball rolling on fantasy football talk and reminds everyone that the NFL regular season is just around the corner. With NFL training camps just now picking up and all teams hitting the practice field by August 2nd, we thought we’d take a look at the top rookies well want to be tracking:

Marcus Mariota, QB, Tennessee Titans

Mariota is without a doubt a top rookie to watch, as he’ll eventually engage in a semi-battle with fellow passer, Zach Mettenberger. That’s probably a losing battle for Mettenberger, but the competition could still be exciting and it could bring the best out of Mariota, as well. Mariota is the classic dual threat quarterback but has actually received a lot of praise for his command of the offense and decision-making since being drafted. If Mariota can continue making strides in his transition to a pro system, he could end up finding solid success in his first season. Seeing that transformation from day one in training camp could be a fun journey for Titans and NFL fans, alike.

Jameis Winston, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

It’s a similar story with fellow rookie passer Winston, who rounds out the only two strong rookie bets to start under center at the position in 2015. A very different player, Winston is less of an athlete and more of a pure game, as he can fit balls into tight windows and takes chances that can be huge for his team. He’s got great pocket presence and has the size and arm strength to tower over the line and hit any pass. Of course, Winston is also a headcase off the field and can be prone to turnovers on it. His development early on will be fun to watch as he tries to turn from a poor decision-maker into a more reliable, disciplined passer.

Melvin Gordon, RB, San Diego Chargers

Ryan Mathews is gone and Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver aren’t starting caliber running backs. Translation: Gordon is slated for a huge role as a rookie and could end up being one of the better rookies to hit the field. There’s no denying Gordon’s college production or his explosive ability, but he also has some work to do. Gordon will have to prove early on that he can be trusted in pass protection, both as a receiver and blocker. He’ll also have to prove he can handle the ball on a regular basis without coughing it up. If he can do those things, he could be well on his way to stardom in year one.

T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars

Todd Gurley should be next in line here, but a knee injury should have him sitting out most of his first go at training camp. That puts Jacksonville’s Yeldon as the next RB to watch this year. Set up to be the Jags’ top running back in just his first season, Yeldon has the build and skill-set of a true featured runner. There is little to dislike about his NFL-ready game, but his offensive line was awful a year ago. Can Yeldon find success up the middle and successfully convert outside runs despite shaky blocking? We should find out early during training camp and in the preseason.

David Cobb, RB, Tennessee Titans

There are other rookie rushers to track, but few others will have a sure-fire crack at a big role right away. Cobb is probably the last realistic candidate for a big role in year one, as he’s really only behind the unimpressive Bishop Sankey. Sankey is tentatively expected to start 2015 as the Titans’ lead back, but the balanced Cobb could push him hard in camp.

Amari Cooper, WR, Oakland Raiders

No one is denying Cooper’s amazing upside, as he brings a big, athletic body and solid speed to the table as a rookie. He’s also got an NFL-ready skill-set and is probably the most polished rookie receiver in this year’s class. His main issue is that he plays for the Raiders, but after seeing what Derek Carr could do in 2014, that may no longer be such a bad thing. Cooper should impress right away and be one of the funnest rookies to monitor in camp.

Kevin White, WR, Chicago Bears

If you’re looking for pure upside out of your rookie wide receiver, no one gives you more than White. A Julio Jones clone, White has amazing size, speed and ball skills. He’s a tad raw and we’ve only see this elite version of him for one year, but the sky is truly the limit for his NFL potential. He’s in a good offense with a great supporting cast, but it will be interesting to see just how long it takes for him to make an impact.

Nelson Agholor, WR, Philadelphia Eagles

Agholor is another strong rookie receiver who has the size and speed to be a terror right away at the highest level. His upside is given a boost by Philly’s amazing offense and if Sam Bradford can stay healthy while returning to form, the Eagles rook may take off from day one.

Maxx Williams, TE, Baltimore Ravens

Dennis Pitta is on the shelf as he continues to rehab his second dislocated hip in two years and Crockett Gillmore is his top replacement at the moment. Cue stud rookie tight end Maxx Williams, who has the size, build and athleticism to be an absolute terror. Made in the Jeremy Shockey mold, Williams is a strong two-way tight end that could carve out a role in his first season. Tight ends don’t normally make a huge impact as rookies, but Williams may not have a choice. It will be interesting to see if he can wow the Ravens enough in camp to earn the starting nod right out of the gates in 2015.
