Top 5 Moments from the 2014-2015 NBA Season (So Far)

Top 5 Moments from the 2014-2015 NBA Season

Another year, another season, and then some. The 2014-2015 NBA season may be a few months shy from being over but we’re getting a head start on reviewing its highlights. The year’s already been packed with record-breaking plays and industry-changing moments, and while we’re sure there will be more to come, we’ve narrowed down our top 5 from this year’s NBA season—so far.

1. Russell Westbrook’s two-handed dunk: https://youtu.be/axfuXEBa-Bo

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook has had a phenomenal season and his play against the Philadelphia 76ers is nothing short of likewise. Sprinting cross-court, in less than five seconds no less, with an effortlessly beautiful two-handed dunk to boot, one might mistake Westbrook as a track-and-field all-star, or a superhuman. Or dare we say both?

2. Lebron James’ return to Cleveland

Arguably one of the most hated players in the NBA—the other being Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant, according to a number of polls —Lebron James isn’t a newbie to the media’s spotlight. So when he publicly announced his return from the Miami Heat to hometown Cleveland to play in the starting lineup for the Cavaliers, the news was widely received with overwhelming popularity and mixed emotion, some good and some bad, but we’ll let you decide for yourself if you haven’t already.

3. James Harden’s ankle breaking play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA3OYmI9uqM

Poor Ricky Rubio. That is all.

4. Klay Thompson’s record-breaking third quarter: https://youtu.be/Sc3m3BwfylA

Klay Thompson is the Golden State Warriors’ very own golden boy having broken records after shooting an unbelievable 37 points in one quarter alone, with 52 overall, against the Sacramento Kings earlier this year. His execution is strategic, his defense is calculated and his drive, unmistakably tour-de-force.

5. Steve Nash’s official retirement from the NBA

The basketball world said it’s woeful (albeit endeared) goodbyes to one of the most valuable players of the recent generation, point guard Steve Nash of the Los Angeles Lakers. With eight All-Star titles, two MVP awards and an approachable off-court demeanor that precedes him still, Nash’s exit was marked with a heartfelt, very human essay titled “Life After Basketball” published on The Players’ Tribune [http://www.theplayerstribune.com/steve-nash-retirement/]—his retirement still reluctant by many but respected by all.

FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid vs real madrid

One of the most anticipated rivalries to exist in sports, soccer clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have gone head-to-head in matches that date as far back as the 1930s. In the last ten years alone, the two teams have faced each other 56 times, Barcelona leading victories with 23 versus Real Madrid’s 17. There is no doubt that the rivalry exudes passion and controversy, and with renowned, perhaps infamous, players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, how can it not?

Critics often analyze Barcelona and Real Madrid by their players and matches, but we’re taking a refreshing approach by creating a more in-depth discussion on their uniforms. Yes, their uniforms! For most teams, the fundamental value of uniforms is to create a sense of community—to foster an identity with said community and establish who’s who, both on and off the field.

Here’s our quick uniform breakdown of FC Barcelona versus Real Madrid:

FC Barcelona stays true to their roots, and it shows, what with the traditional stripes they’ve boasted since the early 1900s. From their classic look down to their crest, Barca (short for FC Barcelona) shows rich history and formidable intent. Today, Barca’s current jersey offers a collar with a v-shaped accent and colors that represent the Senyera flag. Barca’s uniforms are, in essence, not just uniforms; they are symbols of history, strength and determination.

Like FC Barcelona, Real Madrid represents history on their bodies and, consequently, onto the field. Unlike FC Barcelona, however, Real Madrid’s look is more simple and perhaps less daunting to the eye. Their black-and-white jerseys are traditional but not boring. We were excited to see a shift in their look this past year when they added a rugby-like collar, creating clean lines for the jersey’s neckline and the team’s overall appearance.

While we can’t deny both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid’s uniforms speak volumes of their own, Real Madrid’s uniforms take the cake with their minimal look that still makes a big impact on the field. The rugby collar looked beautiful on France’s kits at the 2014 World Cup and continues to have the same effect through their shirts. With recent trends heading toward minimalism and simplicity, Madrid was able to adapt and represent their own sense of community through a simplistic beauty.

NCAA Basketball

While the NCAA Men’s basketball season has officially come to a close with Duke’s Blue Devils taking the National Championship by outlasting the Wisconsin Badgers in a great game, Mike Krzyzewski comes out with his fifth National Championship, second only to the legendary John Wooden, who had ten with the UCLA Bruins.   The Wisconsin Badgers held the lead through the second half but couldn’t put Duke away.  Star Frank Kaminsky put up his usual great numbers as he battled and outplayed Duke’s heralded freshmen center.   Sam Dekker seemed to lose his touch after getting hit in the face in the later part of the second half going in for a rebound.  However, Duke pulled it out with freshman Grayson Allen coming through in the clutch for the Blue Devils along with Point Guard Tyus Jones.

Tonight, we head on to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship where we see a familiar look with Connecticut and Notre Dame playing for the title in the second consecutive year.   All eyes will be on the Huskies, as a victory could tie Geno Auriemma with John Wooden with 10 overall NCAA titles.   UConn’s powerhouse lineup includes Kaleena Mosquda-Lewis, who leads the nation in three point shooting, Breanna Stewart, National Player of the Year last season and first team All- American this year, and guards Moriah Jefferson and Kia Nurse.

However, everyone loves an underdog and Notre Dame has the talent to potentially upend the Huskies, having won seven of the past eleven games in the series.    Notre Dame’s Brianna Turner, a lead rebounder and top scorer will make her presence known on the floor as well as Jewell Lloyd, who is one of the best players in the country and Notre Dame’s lead scorer.  Coach Muffet McGraw, who is seeking her 700th victory at Notre Dame, states that UConn’s intimidation is not a factor with them as much as other teams.   Notre Dame may not possess the overall talent as UConn, but Coach McGraw sells one notion- UConn can be beaten and Notre Dame as done it before.

MLB Opening Day

The 2015 Major League baseball season officially opened in full force yesterday.  Considering this is only the first game of 162, we love to make sweeping conclusions from that from that one single game you can either start printing World Series tickets or having a fire sale.   However, the most tweeted items about yesterday’s games weren’t the players nor some the great plays of the day, but of the stadium food.  From Darby’s Bacon Tots at Target Field (Twins), Chicken Fried Bacon at Globe Life Park (Rangers), deep fried Oreos at Busch Stadium (Cardinals), the incredible Pizza Burger at US Cellular Field (White Sox), or the Tommy Lasorda Meatball Marinara Cones at Right Field Pavilion (Dodgers),  we don’t know what is more exciting – the 2.5 hour game or the food.    Bon Apetit!

TOP 5 WAYS TO MOTIVATE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAM

High school baseball team uniform

215

Baseball season is arriving in the pros with spring training coming around the corner shortly and some amateur baseball seasons – whether it be little league baseball or high school games – may have even already begun. With baseball season really starting to rev up, it’s always good to have a few tricks up your sleeve in regards to how to keep your players engaged and motivated.

Let’s run through some of the best ways to go about that as a coach:

Keep it Loose

First thing’s first, it’s always important to have a time and a place for discipline and the hard work in practice. But for the most part, you’ll want to make practice fun, make it competitive and stay away from redundancy and drills that are a giant bore. You’re at practice to get better, but you’re also there to grow as a team and come together. Creating competition, joking with players and even rewarding them (we’ll touch on that later) can be very big in keeping them engaged and it doesn’t even take all that much to get it done. This can and should stretch into games, too. Let kids chew on seeds in the dug out, encourage conversation during the game, and make sure your players are focused but always having fun.

Bulletin Board

One of the best ways to motivate a player or a team is to go to where the heart of the team is – in the locker room. This is where the kids start their practice and game days and it’s usually where they end them, too. From photos of legendary ball players to classic quotes to goals they can chase, you can litter the locker room with various motivating criteria that can help get your team ready for the task at hand, and you don’t even have to be present to have it kick in.

Give Feedback

Individually and as a team, you’re going to want to let the players know how they’re doing. It’s always good to take a struggling player aside and dish out a little needed criticism, but then pile on top of that 2-3 compliments about what they usually are good at or what they are presently doing well. If a player is in a hitting slump, you can pull them aside and inform them you’re aware of the drought, and they don’t have to worry about it as long as they keep giving you 100% on defense like they have been, and so on. Even when players are doing well, they still need positive reinforcement at times so they know they’re on the right path and that the hard work and good production they’re putting forth is noticed and appreciated. Players are people with feelings and goals. If you help them stay the course by showing them you’re thankful, impressed or even proud, it can be huge in their development and will only strengthen them as a team.

Reward Them

How do you get teams to play better, to stay engaged, to willingly increase their focus and effort? Reward them. You never want it to get to the point where there is always a carrot hanging from a rope or that they will only get this if they do this, but there is a proper place for rewarding your players. If we give it out all and that is evident, then this happens, or if we win the title we get new custom baseball uniforms for next year. It can be big or small, but sprinkling in rewards for your team to chase after in addition to individual and team goals can be highly beneficial.

Fire Them Up

It sounds silly and overly simple, but what better way to motivate your team than give them a motivational speech? Not everyone can pull off an Al Pacino speech or fire teams up like Tim Tebow did at Florida, but you have life experiences and probably played baseball in your past, so you can dig deep and offer them something genuine that they will respect. Two of the cores of motivation are respect and inspiration, so if you feed off of some humility and can relate it to what they can achieve, you may have something. It doesn’t need to necessarily be a do or die speech and it doesn’t need to be at a specific time, but getting down to earth with your team and pulling back the coach mask and showing your humanity every now and then can definitely pull everyone closer together as they fight for the same unified goal.

5 TEAMS THAT COULD MAKE LAMAR MILLER A FEATURE BACK

football uniform at uniform store

216

All Lamar Miller wants to do is be the man. That could still happen in South Beach, but as it stands, the free agent running back may have to leave the Miami Dolphins in order to pursue his dream of being a team’s star rusher. Miller admitted recently that he’d love around 20 total touches per game and to be leaned on heavily in an offense. Of course, that type of guaranteed role means big cash and could mean he’s playing elsewhere.

So, with free agency rapidly approaching and Miller not set to be tagged by the Fins, it’s fair to wonder where else he could sign? More specifically, what other teams could look at Miller as a featured runner? Let’s take a look at five teams that make a good amount of sense:

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys learned the hard way this past season what life can be like without a reliable, top shelf running back. After saying no to DeMarco Murray in free agency a year ago, perhaps they’ll wise up and say yes to a different rusher on the market this time around. That could be Miller, who has flashed brilliance at times in Miami and can offer the home run play, as well as catch the ball effectively out of the backfield. It really comes down to whether or not Dallas sees him as a true feature back and if they are willing to pay up to get him with custom football jersey.

New York Jets

The door is open for Gang Green to make a change at running back, as last year’s starter – Chris Ivory – is likely headed elsewhere. Ivory was a strong starter in 2015, but he is routinely banged up and doesn’t offer quite the explosiveness or versatility Miller appears to. With no other locked in feature back for 2016, the Jets could look to steal a rival’s impending free agent.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans simply do not have an NFL starter at running back right now. They have spare parts and an unproven option in soon to be second-year rusher, David Cobb. None of the guys they have bring Miller’s explosive ability to the table and on sheer talent, he’d trump them all. Tennessee is said to want to become more of an “exotic smash mouth” offense, which basically means they want to be able to run the ball and play around with their weapons. Miller would allow them to do that at a very high level, putting him in play to become a Titan if they’re willing to pay up.

Houston Texans

Arian Foster is out the door and as we saw after he went down with a torn Achilles last year, the Texans do not have much else at running back. They’ll probably draft at the position, but bringing in a proven rusher with untapped upside is another way to go. Miller is rather dynamic and in Houston’s system he could blow the hinges off and put up a career season. The big question is whether the so far frugal Texans will be willing to pay for the upgrade.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs may be the sleeper team to watch for two big reasons: Miller can likely be had for cheaper than their own free agent rusher (Doug Martin) and they don’t seem to think backup Charles Sims would be the answer. With Martin likely to make more elsewhere, the Bucs may quickly have to replace their franchise running back. Miller fits the bill as a potential answer and with the team not sold on Sims, it’s a move we’ll need to monitor.

Think one of these options is a lock or there is a better one out there? Let us know in the comments below!

HOW TO BECOME THE BEST LITTLE LEAGUE COACH

best little league uniform set

217

There is a first for just about everything in life and whether you have kids playing little league baseball or not, you may come across your first opportunity to coach a team eventually. If you’re like most people, you’ll probably only want to take on such a job if you’re either a big fan of the sport or get the chance to teach your own child. Either way, though, you’ll also likely be interested in “hitting it out of the park” when it comes to doing a good job.

How do you know you’re doing a good job and becoming the best little league baseball coach you can be, though? A lot of it is opinion and an argument can be made that only your players can answer that for sure, but chances are if you try to follow a few of our tips, you’ll do okay:

Embrace the Hate

Hopefully you know when it goes too far, but there has to be a certain point to where you’ll let parents and kids express their own beliefs. Tearing you or other players down is never excusable, but you should always respect your players and their parents. With that being said, you definitely don’t always have to agree with them or give in to their demands. You’re the coach and this is your show, but if you let everyone feel like they’re being heard, and you go in knowing you can’t please everyone, you’ll be ahead of the curve.

Learn the Basics

This is especially true if you weren’t a player in your past or if you’ve never coached. Even if you had played and/or coached before, there are still going to be a lot of tidbits you can pick up along the way. But if you are a newbie at being the top guy for a little league baseball team, you should make sure you’re well informed. Researching the game, how to manage a team and strategies is just the tip of the iceberg. If you actually want to be successful in terms of winning games and developing your talent, you may want to enhance your research and preparation. After all, the better you prepare yourself and your players, the less our first tip may even come into play.

Get Ready Early

One of the big things when first starting out is to be so prepared that no one can even tell that this is your first year on the job. It’s going to be hard enough figuring out how to adjust your roster and strategies on the fly, so it’s a good idea to make sure there are very few (if any) unplanned obstacles that pop up and make your coaching life harder than it has to be.

This can be a number of things, ranging from ordering your team’s custom baseball uniforms on time, to getting connected with players and their parents, to knowing the league schedule and truly, the list can go on and on. It’s not always possible to knock out everything before the season starts or even before your first practice, but creating a checklist and narrowing it down as best as possible can only help you.

There is more to learn and know about becoming a good little league baseball coach, but starting with these three key tips will certainly point you in the right direction. In summary, if you want to be a good first year coach, you want to prepare to be challenged by players and parents, know what you’re doing and talking about when it comes to the sport in general and have all of your bases covered when it comes to everything the team needs to operate effectively.

If you get those three areas down before the season begins, you’ll be in a good spot to do well during your first season.
